Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

But I never expect a single tcp connection to give me line speed. Never have, never will. Gonna test nntp now.

Looks like around 600KB sec which is par for my 6mb line.

To be throttled to a quarter of your speed for downloading 40gb, is completely unacceptable. For the same price I could have bought an unshaped 60gb account, so how does that even make sense?

Seriously guys, the best thing I ever did was cancel my account last week so I can put all this bull**** behind me.

Did you read my last post? I have downloaded well over 200GB in the last 30 days.

Have you pm'd AfriMan? There could be an issue on your account...

Well I logged a case with their support directly, received responses from 7 different support members thoughout the week, ran the traceroutes, tested different accounts. In the end they confirmed I'm being throttled but can't answer the question of why my usage justifies it, beyond their last response of "We manage all of our uncapped accounts on an hour to hour basis depending on the performance of our network at that time. This is why some days your connection will be at maximum speed and other you downloads will be slower"

Listen man I'm not trying to be a hater, and I'm glad you're not affected. But for everyone else like me who is, enough is enough

4Mb line and getting 61 KB/s on nntp at 01:14 in the morning. I really wanted to believe that you could fix this disaster of a switch over to MTN. I have a feeling that it is not going to get better soon if ever. Even gaming and youtube tonight was sub par.

Cancelled account. Will probably move the line back to telkom soon.

Good luck

Bye

sinbad are you employed by afrihost every single post u make seems 2 be pro afrihost.

Nope. I'm just a reasonably happy customer who also understands that there are people involved here, and ranting and bitching and moaning doesn't help anyone, rather just makes things unbearable for everyone. If you'd ever worked as customer support you'd understand.

Also, read some more. I post problems too. Difference is I tend not to accuse them of ripping me off, I rather try to be constructive.

oh wait - torrents have now increased! No longer 10Kbps - they're going at almost full-line speed. Just like old times!

When torrents were slow, speedtest was still decent - giving 0.8 or 0.9 Mbps (1Mbps line)

Let's hope the speeds stay!

Well the speeds didn't stay

Torrent speeds go at full speed for the first minute - then back to ridiculous shaping (<10Kb/s).

ISP of the year? Hm.

No one is expecting full line speed from a single thread, however imho it is a much better test than speedtests "projected" multi thread. Comparing testmy and speedtest it is speedtest that varies the most...

Are NNTP shaped/throttled during the day? Because I see yesterday 7am it dropped to almost 30kb/s for 1 meg line..

Did you read my last post? I have downloaded well over 200GB in the last 30 days.

Ive done around 70 gigs this month on the 4-meg uncapped, and my speed is consistently at 55kbps day or night. I phoned Afrihost to see what the problem is, and I've told that I've been shaped heavily because of my heavy usage. I should see better speeds in 10 days.

Funny thing is, in 8 days it will be December. I'm really disappointed at the situation. I had no idea that 70 gigs was considered "heavy and excessive". I wish I received an email or sms warning that my usage was heavy, so I could sort it out. But now its too late.

So how exactly are you getting away with 200 gigs? What is secret?

Hi Guys

Seems like we didn't get to open up shaping as much as we wanted to last night. Speeds would have improved this morning, but we are trying to give as much as we can. Sorry about that, we have found the issue and fixed it. I'm also monitoring from my own account and I'm getting a better idea of what the experience is like. We also need to troubleshoot extensively because results seem to be mixed now. Everyone should be getting a good browsing & streaming experience, even if you're downloads are shaped.

I just want to follow up a few comments, and the experience of a particularly disgruntled ex-client who has been asked to leave this thread by MyBB. At the end of the day, I'm here to help, not to tell you that what you're experiencing doesn't exist or that we don't care. It's the opposite, I'm always available to help, and I read through the feedback I get and compare to my own experience to see if there are general issues, or if we need to see what's happening on your side.

Don't post awful and offensive stuff, especially at each other, or spam our social media - it makes it harder to engage with you and just makes it that much longer and more difficult to find a way to help you and give you what you need. I can 100% promise you that as soon as you raise an issue with me, it's going to be dealt with, and I'll follow up your support queries and complaints if you're not getting an answer. Ever notice what happens when you're in a shop and someone is shouting at a shop assistant? Two things - the shop assistant goes dumb and stops trying to help, and the other customers start looking at their shoes and waiting for the person to finish their rant and leave so they can carry on with their purchases. Please, please don't be THAT person. Be the person who's pleasant and cordial, but authoritative, and I'll bet you'll end up walking out with what you want plus a whole lot of stuff you didn't even ask for. Anyone can PM me at any time, and I'm always open to listening to what you suggest to get your issues sorted quickly.

That's just my 2c - Use / Don't Use :)

By the way, in case you haven't heard - we're launching something pretty awesome today, so keep your eyes open. We'll announce everything on Facebook and Twitter, and I'll post everything here as well later in the day.

We're moving away from thresholds, it's not about a total usage, it's about the usage pattern and what services are being used in consuming the bandwidth. The rules are dynamic, so the system determines how to categorise users on a variety of criteria and patterns. If I could do that kind of math, I would have a microchip in my brain (and work for NASA), so I can't give you guys any values like we did in the past.

These things are not going to be determined by thresholds anymore, we've moved away from those static guidelines, we're dynamically shaping according to current network capacity and various usage patterns and trends.

I've done 10.3GB over the last 10 days, and I am still being throttled to a quarter of my line/account speed, so I really don't think data usage has anything to do with it - everyone just gets a quarter of their advertised speed.

Initially we had to tar pretty much everyone with the same brush, but we've now introduced better logic and more degrees of shaping to give a fairer performance to those with less usage. We are still working on making shaping more dynamic so that it works closer to real time, and shaping should fluctuate as capacity is tracked.

DO you think Clientzone would be able to have some kind of realtime indication of capacity, so we can easily see whether the network is under load which would explain possible performance issues?
