Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

One thing a lot of people seem to think is that Uncapped must perform better than capped at all times, and it must be able to run full tilt all the time. I cannot imagine that this is what the ISPs have in mind? If you want guaranteed performance, go for fibre or leased line and get what you pay for. ADSL has contention ratios and is a best effort service based on the behaviour of others sharing the service with you, right?

I have a 4Mb line with a 4Mb uncapped account from afrihost. So far this month speeds have been about 1/4 of what I am used to pre mtn. One will think when u dl from torrents ill get respectable speeds but alas 8:22 on a Saturday night I am being throttled/capped/QOS ( I do not care what afrihost calls it ) to a cr@ppy 6Kb/s on a well seeded torrent. So all due respect to you and your post nicki but we are being screwed by afrihost . I have used 43.2GB on this account this month.

Edit: While I am venting I really hate it when afriman asks for your username or to pm him and they will see if they can sort something out. SO does this means all the people that do not visit these kinds of forums must just be happy with the subpar service?Do all of us not pay the same amount of money for the same service?

Pretty good speeds here up in PTA. Seems to be an issue only if are note close to JHB...

since I did post when I had bad speeds, I think only fair to post when speeds are good ... so ...
been getting almost constant 188KB speeds since friday night .... so whatever your did AH, do not change it :)
btw .. this is across nntp and http(browsing and downloads)

just waiting to see what happens on monday and during the week

Edit : youtube however seems to be not so good ... barely getting 100KB ... something I can live with, but would be good to have this sorted as well

Hey Guys

Seems like speeds are good, and for most downloads are going well. That's really great to hear, I'm really hoping that things will still get even better - we're really greatful for the large majority that stuck with us and had faith that we would make good on our promises.

Anyone still battling, you know you can always drop me a PM :)

I think the best approach is to deal with individual issues, and not to speak for the majority. After all we are not the government, we provide a personal service to each individual client with unique infrastrustructure and circumstances . It actually ends up making fixing the issue harder. Best to always start with what you are experiencing. Just an example, a client was emailing me, support and Gian and complaining that our network was blocking his overseas server. Sent multiple complaints, hellopeters, and it turned out that he had "brute force attacked" his own server, and we still managed to fix it for him in the end. But it took days and days of us trying to deal with his issue as a general network complaint, whereas he could have had a solution in a few minutes.

So long story short, give us the chance to deal with your individual symptoms and find a solution for you. We keep track of the number of similar issues are being reported, and if this turns out to be a general issue, fixing it for you will help us fix it for everyone else.

Use / Don't Use :)

I'm only getting 40-60kB/s downloading NVIDIA drivers :( this is gonna take a while

Would like to see where that faith is gonna go when they get back home from work on Monday afternoon and find speeds right back to 7KB/s until 2:00 in the morning

That doesn't sound like faith at all :(

I think we have shown that we are getting better and better, so it's actually not a matter of faith so much as a matter of time:)

10mb uncapped, Durban (183gB usage):

speedtest.net: Starts at full line speed (1mBps) then drops and stays at 250kBps (shaped)
1080p YouTube: Full line speed (1.1mBps)
NNTP: Max 250kBps
Download from cnet.com: Max 250kBps

Not this again, please... I'm in Pretoria and I mostly get somewhere inbetween 1/16th and 1/4th of the advertised speed.

Well I managed about 4-5 gigs today and not even trying since it's limited to 300kbs download speed.

so it seems i was meant to be on a managed profile. except nntp was on full speed and http was throttled.

and then they fixed http and still nntp was flying.

Everything (speedtest.net / YouTube / NNTP) running at full line speed at the moment (1.1mBps) :D
