Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

I get shaping downloads so that general browsing is not affected to badly.
But yesterday my 2mb line was going at 5 kB/s.
Surely there has to be some middle ground between full speed and effectively disabling all downloads.

How can Afrihost claim to have all this extra capacity but the network can't handle anything but browsing most of the time?

...Steam downloads from JHB node is steady so far without fail. Still going strong.

4mb uncapped. had atrocious speeds last 2days. call center tells me this morning its because my account is being "managed". When pressed for further info, they tell me its being shaped. After 100gb

thats fkn useless. bye bye afrihost, back to mweb for me

Ok, lets just make something clear, the problem wasnt the move from IS to MTN, the problem is their shaping policies. When they moved to MTN I was getting faster speeds then with IS. My suggestion is that you move to Business uncapped if you can, my speeds are maxed with business, I was getting 5KB/s 20mins before i moved to the business uncapped and this was with the 4meg bundle, I moved over to the 2meg business uncapped and a while later I was downloading at 190 KB/s.

I tried this. It was a disaster, because they shape business uncapped HEAVILY after hours, so evenings and weekends are effectively unusable.

Local means nothing. I get 1kb/sec from a local mirror and line speed from an overseas NNTP site :P

So everything was flying for the few days before the 25th (cancellation date). Was getting full speed on all my uncapped accounts. Now it's all back to the 23% to 33% range regardless of usage. This makes one quite cynical about their motives.

I reckon Afrihost has gone from ISP of the year to worst ISP in the country in the space of one month.

Staying... for now. All ISPs have their issues; issues they seem to develop only shortly after I move my business there. So I'll wait it out this time 'round, partly because I still respect Afrihost for starting the affordable dsl ball rolling all those many moons ago. Mostly because my account seems fine at present. I moved more data this month than at any time in the previous 6 or so. We'll see what the following month or 2 bring.

My Account is not doing too good at the moment, BUT I have also moved more data during this month than I did since joining them 6 Odd months ago. I will however stick it out for the time being.

Didn't you leave Afrihost?

As for international... I'd be doing some Linux ISOs later on ;)

I still have my Afrihost account till the 30th

LOL. Love them Linux ISOs

Yeah they are scumbags.. I knew it would happen, now be prepared for 23-33% until around the 20th or so next month. But don't fall for the same tricks again.

Sorry, it simply not true and please try to be civil - this is a feedback forum :(

so I am also on a 4Gb uncapped, but shaped heavily.... informed by AH that we are being "monitored over a 10 day rolling window"! But as far as I know, this was the OLD way of doing things?! When I asked Afriman a few months back, he said that the 10 day rolling window was used years back! And this is why I signed up with them, I knew that I could do about 250GB without any issues! but AH has moved back to the old way of monitoring things, and they are not going to change for the better! Its no point waiting anymore for things to "stabilize" after their move to MTN, This is the way things are staying!

This is not true at all. To do something like what you suggest would be blatantly dishonest, and that's not what we as a company are about. We shape according to capacity, and clients determine the demand for bandwidth, not us.

I think suggestion that we would be that devious is going a little too far, IMHO :(

Sounds like maybe the person who conveyed this might be misinformed. We are running daily training sessions to get our guys up to date :(

We are doing away with throttles and rolling windows. We assess network capacity/ bandwidth availability continously to determine the maximum amount of capacity we can divert to downloads without affecting other services. And when downloads are slow, real times services should run at max speed on your line, i.e. You Tube, SSH, VoIP, browsing, etc.

All the old guidelines of thresholds no longer apply. We are shaping dynamically, so there is no straight calculation. We look at usage trends, protocols used, projected use, and various other factors to determine how this is applied, and it varies on an individual basis. There are no more rolling windows and thresholds at all.

This is from Ashley at AH:

Hi there

Thanks for your mail.

Please note that you account is currently being shaped.

Uncapped accounts will be shaped if their usage is high and will be monitored over a 10 day rolling window. Once the usage drops ,your the shaping will be removed. While being shaped you will have full speed on realtime and http ,although your p2p and downloads will be shaped causing slower speeds.

Please feel free to contact us should you require any further assistance.

Hi there

Trust you are well :)

Please note the account is being managed down.
This means that during times when traffic on real time services is high your downloads will be managed down.
However all real time services will run smoothly.

Please do not hesitate to contact us if we may be of further assistance.

Warm Regards
Anthony

Strange that my real time services, i.e. browsing, has NEVER been smooth!! And oh, I have NEVER had decent download speeds! whether the first day of the month or at 1am in the morning! I already have 6 ticket numbers from AH..... only for November!
