Serious noob question.. what is a news server and what does it do?
Sorry to jump in and be random but when asking someone from the support team why my speeds were so poor on my 4mb uncapped account I was told that I used up ,"19,6 GB in a period of 2 hours". I don't understand how this is even possible. When questioning about how that's even possible he sent me a screenshot of logs to prove it to me. So it seems like there's some false reporting going on now![]()
Don't forget that Afrihost have their system set up to give as much bandwidth to Speedtest.net as possible, so you can't use Speedtest.net to measure what speed you're getting from Afrihost. It's more accurate to start downloading some big file and see what speed you get out of the download.
Just thought I'd share an nice email I just sent to Afrihost...
Good Day
Unfortunately I have not received the expected level of service delivery from the second highest rated ISP in the country. As such I would like to cancel my account and clam back the money I have wasted so far. I would hope that your company proves true to its word.

What was the problem?
Unrealistic and nontransparent throttling.
I would like to point out that I work in the IT industry and that I have been closely and accurately monitoring my ADSL connection over the past few days. As such I can say with confidence that the quality and stability of my local infrastructure can not be at fault.
One of the main reasons I moved from my Mweb 1Mb/s account was to improved my experience of streaming content. However over the last few days during reasonable times i.e. 5pm to 11pm I have been throttled to exactly and consistently half my line speed i.e. 1Mb/s. This I gather from afriman's comments on mybroadband is a punitive measure brought about by my "usage patterns". Last night (03/12/2012) my connection was dead from 11.30pm to 6.30am the next morning. It seems that the entire time I'm actually at home i.e. 5pm to 12pm will in future be experienced at half the speed I'm paying for, This is not acceptable!
Unfortunately as a result of the nontransparent nature of your bandwidth management systems I have no idea what constitutes an "infringement" or "abuse", I use these terms loosely as we are talking about an uncapped connection. Although I understand the need for a sustainable business model, I have found the method by which afrihost employs its bandwidth management systems to be unpalatable.
I will be moving my account to webafrica who are far more transparent about what "acceptable use" is.
Regards
I've been reading this this thread for a bout a week in horror since I bought the Business Uncapped from Afrihost as a first time ADSL customer. Well, my router arrived today and I'm receiving solid 1Mbps speeds (the speed I ordered) both during office hours, and now (11pm). Just thought I'd leave a positive response to show that it's not all bad out there.
You should really give it a few days to see if this isn't just 'new account smoothness.'
WOW at this time of night, steam is not even going past 5kB/s on a 4meg line.
i guess i know what i've gotta do

With Ah since 1910, 4 meg uncapped line. Evenings not able to even watch you tube anymore.
Since yesterday I'm trying Mweb's 7 day free account and it is way better. Speedtest is about the same.
Downloads better as well.
Will try it for another few days and then make a decision.
Sorry but I doubt that statement. With Ah since 1910
