I'm still checking with our guys if any changes were made on our side. From what I can tell, some clients did experience higher latency than usual, resulting slow throughput - but this seems to have only been for an hour or so late last night.

I left home just before 9:00. Reset router. Tested again, and still had those download speeds. Nothing else affected except for downloads.

At about 18:00 i was downloading at 100kb/s then at between 21:00 and 23:00 it was crawling along at between 0 and 1kb/s.
Like i said earlier streaming seemed fine. Normal browsing was quite fast as well.

I am really confused by the new shaping policy. Some users on this thread are claiming wonder speeds all day and night while others like myself are really battling. I thought certain protocols would be shaped and not certain users? Or is it a combination of both.

Did a check now and current speed test is 100kp/s on a 2mb line.

It's not line related. Suspect something with account. Had the same problem last week, and support did something that fixed it. Also happens with Microsoft service pack downloads etc. Youtube HD streaming works 100%.

I'm going to have to agree with kripstoe here - it's definitely not a line issue - I was experiencing the exact same thing last night. Gaming (for the most part - I kept getting dc'd from Guildwars 2) was fine, streaming was fine, Steam-downloads rocked, browsing was fine ... HTTP downloads were kittened. Switch to WebAfrica - and everything breezed.

Maybe it could be account-based? Possible, although I hardly consider myself a heavy user - I don't honestly know, but let me know if 27GB on a 4Mbps line is heavy?

Also telling, perhaps, that none of my Windows Updates came through - December's patching cycle happened this week (would've been early yesterday morning). My work PC and my laptop (on CellC) both updated - home PC? Nada.

This is what I got from AH support:

Please note that the reason your downloads are slow is because we shape all downloads on the uncapped accounts when the network is congested.

This is to ease the load on the network so we can keep all real time services such as browsing, VOIP (Skype), gaming and video streaming running at full speed at all times.

reinstalling World of Warcraft... 20GB , might as well give up using my computer for oh say 5days

well suffice to say, it has been better than expected getting and average of 370KB/s although it dropped to around 10KB/s for about 2.5hrs earlier (19GB of 20.7GB) and total hours so far 11hrs since starting... minimal P2P mostly direct download...

so no bitching from me today...

You show a complete ignorance of how the Internet works...
You need to learn about receive and transmit windows, latency and related concepts to understand why a single stream will always be slower than multiple streams.

Meanwhile, are afrihost also prioritizing nntp?

You need to learn how the internet works buddy. Speedtest is multithreaded (or whatever) so is my Sabnzbd (50 CONNECTIONS!!!!!), and Speedtest always goes 10 times the speed, so obviously Speedtest is whitelisted. Its to produce dummy results, so they can say their internet is perfect whereas in the real world its not. Its a fair test with only the protocol changing.

Back up your allegations about Speedtest being whitelisted.
I know more about how the Internet works than you would think, actually.

That is not correct, we don't prioritise speedtest or have a proxy server to colour results. I have said this before. We prioritise browsing and realtime service, there is no white-listing of sites.

The next guy who makes a statement like this, is required to back it up by explaining how latency and bandwidth affects the TCP window size and why single threaded (possibly non-segmented) download should get a similar download speed to a multi-threaded, segmented (Speedtest possibly) test.

Challenge accepted.

Weapon of choice is Firefox with DTA (I reckon it works similar to Speedtest, and you did not provide any limitations). Downloaded the same file as yesterday, to show that I did not choose a file that I know will download fast. You can check the previous pages for speed I got yesterday.

Baseline using Speedtest. Did not pick any specific server.

Hmm... Hard to beat?

18MB File download from whatever CDN.

Not too far off what Speedtest showed.

Testmy.net is up next.

So here I am, at 1:30 AM in the morning, uploading to my server in the USA, at the magnificent speed of 4.04 KB/s, and that on a 10 Mbps business uncapped line.

Afrihost, WTF is going on? Can we please go back to IS? This MTN network is not working.

Also, can you advise if Business Uncapped is throttled at all? I seem to remember the blurb saying it is NOT throttled, but my download speeds indicate that it is ...

I agree with you that Afrihost doesn't whitelist speed test.

But the problem is not on TestMy. My uncapped account will did 5kb/s last night. Switched to capped account and I was getting 210 kb/s.
