i must say I was not impressed with the speed at all yesterday. It took 3hrs to download a 500MB file. I'm running a 1MB connection and download averages to about 166MB per hour. By my calcs this is gives me a speed of about 51k/sec for international

...not impressed. MWEB I got at 80 - 85k

I've just moved back to Openweb... Sorry Afrihost, your service has been excellent but since the move to MTN and lack of a decent newsserver I've given up. As soon as this service improves as well as all the issues are resolved with the move I might consider moving back. Really sad to leave:-(

download speeds are horrible. wasnt getting more than 15k/sec last night. Online gaming is a joke as well. Worse than when I only had a 384line. Afrihost, im giving you one week to sort this crap out. Ive had enough now!

I've just spoken to Afrihost support...nothing really said I didn't already now. I know that some traffic types take priority over others, however, the capped accounts are unshaped and they get AWESOME connection speeds IRRESPECTIVE of what they are doing. Is this where AH is making their real $$?

I did tell the dude that I know certain protocols get higher priority during the day and that makes business sense but do apply such aggressive Access-lists and QoS after hours, are you for real? He says "I will contact AfriMan and perhaps he can escalate to Management."

~yawn~

Just joined AH again after about a year...guess I'm leaving again after one day. They guarantee the connection speeds for HTTP traffic only.

AfriMan - Your thoughts, comments...whatever blah, blah, blah...

excuse my ignorance, but how and what are news servers?? i remember something that used to part of my mail package that i had to setup, but that was so long ago i have kinda forgotten or got left behind....

I see not much has changed since I left for another ISP. Really feeling for you guys still struggling along.

Don't know if that's 100% fair; there definitely has been substantial improvement. It's still a wee bit temperamental, but certainly not nearly as big a cock-up as just after the switch.

One of the reasons why I left was because of a problematic network. It looks worse than before.

Something I have noticed is even though it seems like an across the country problem, like M-CUC, its specific access-points into AH network. This again leads me to believe that is AGGRESSIIVVEE shaping at these nodes because of high traffic volumes coming through? Have they put any sniffers there to suss out the traffic type, and possible the ports its coming in from?

MHO, it would appear that nothing's changed. AH should have made provision for the "technical glitches"? I say hold the PM for this HUGE project accountable and find another provider.

When I called support, the guy couldn't even tell me if they were 2nd or 3rd tier ISP.

...just saying...

It's not.

That's ridiculous.

Why must they know that to help with a problem?

@ kripstoe

- All my comments are based on my past experiences. Not sure how long you've been with AH and don't care.

- Ridiculous? Thats your opinion. Network migration affects business and as such ALL possible "what if" and "worst case" scenarios should be planned for...this is very basic Project Management principles.

- Lets just say coming from an ISP background too, it does at times assist in troubleshooting problems especially when it could be vendor related.

thanks for your comments though....
