I must say I since my usage patern has changed and I no longer require to work from home at all this policy seems to be working for me.
BUUUT I still dont think you should have gone for shaping certain protocols for all users when the network gets put under strain. It's not fair to the people that have only downloaded 50mb a month and then gets shaped right back to 2001.
If there are to many people on the network rather go back to the "Naughty corner aproach" as you put it. At least this way a user would know why he is battling. This might take some strain of the network.
Could you also clarify if the network is under strain do capped users also take a hit in performance? I agree it shouldn't be as bad as the uncapped guys but at least spread the issues around a bit.
ok....lets think about this for a second
I agree the "naughty corner" approach might the right approach, however, how about warning the user first of the excessive usage and directing the user to the section of AUP that explains this and should the user persist...then enforce the policy? When you shape that user aggressively, is it for a indefinite period of time because if so, you'll never see if that user does it again. It then defeats the purpose. So...what is the period of time for shaping?
@AfriMan - I think in all fairness, the shaping and/or QoS should not be so aggressive at night maybe from about 9PM onwards? Yes, QoS is configured and designed for you to prioritise traffic but the whole idea and reason for users to start their huge downloads, gaming etc., from that time on is because the network then becomes quiet? Right? It makes business sense to apply the policy during the day. Could we see, in order of priority which protocols get preference?
How about posting some network stats for the last few months? Basically, showing us, your customers, at which of your nodes the highest traffic has been seen? This would also show a trend. Maybe AH should zoom in on those nodes, apply a sniffer and then drill down port specific to see who the culprit(s) are and these are the ones that need whipping?
I spoke to a few friends last night who also switched to AH at the same time I did and their DL speeds have not dropped. They DL between 180 - 250GBpm. Onoe of them is already on just under 100GB. So where's the shaping there? Contradiction?
