Just a note on this:-

JHB-DBN link is not live yet, that will be in the next few days. We're not sure how much of an effect this will have until the DBN IPC is lit up. However latencies between JHB and CPT should start improving as that fibre link is up and running, which hopefully also affect international latencies as we break out onto WACS in Cape Town.

I'll let you guys know of any developments in terms of QoS revisions and any other interim solutions as we wait for IPC to go live.

Are your current Johannesburg IPC at least redundant or is that one link coming in at MTN's office (that one on 14th Avenue)? Also, when your DBN and Cape Town IPCs are in place and Johannesburg fails, will it automatically failover to the other IPC or how does it work?

Our IPC is actually in New Doornfontein, with a failover in Randburg. So that redundancy is already in place. I'm not sure what the full details are at this stage, but I would imagine that should any of the other cities IPC's fail, they will failover to JHB at this stage. If we get to the stage where they have more IPC, maybe around 5Gbps, then they may also require additional local failovers.

IPC is generally not something that fails, unless the entire data centre goes down, which has never happened and is unlikely to ever happen - considering the amount of redundancy and backup that MTN run.

That is very interesting since I have seen notifications by MWEB, WebAfrica and even IS in the past, their IPCs that went down. Guess their data centres are not as robust as MTN's.

when will the CPT-PE 10Gbps go live?
 
I have seen full DC outages before... it's not unheard of.

I'm not sure how their data centres work. Some DC's claim to have full power redundancy, but actually mean that they run on two Eskom circuits, and perhaps a small generator. MTN's DC's have massive generators. Their Gallo Manor DC has 3 generators that are used for powering oceanliners, each of which could run the entire DC for 3-4 days. New Doornfontein DC will eventually have it's own Trigen power plant, so chances of failing, unless it's due to a nuclear explosion or taxi falling from the sky (highly plausible considering how they drive), I think we're pretty safe.

Tell them to stop bloody powering oceanliners then, and start powering DCs! ;)
 
I'm just waiting for final confirmation of dates for the new IPC to go live, and we'll publish all the details in our Newsroom and refer our followers, likes and this thread to once it's up.

I suppose nothing is impossible. Still, I was pretty impressed by the way they plan for every possible contingency. I was also impressed that their DC was totally spotless, the amount of care and attention to detail is just crazy. They must find the most OCD people to run them :)

That's some of our guys on a tour of the facilities. Obviously we couldn't photograph or publish everything for confidentiality purposes, but I think the awesomeness comes through.

I tried to get into the R&D centre in 14th Avenue - there was a steel door about 12 inches thick, and was told "Computer says NO!" :) Maybe should have tried the flying taxi manoeuvre :D

As you can see, new IPC will go live LATEST 25 Feb, but we are still applying pressure on Telkom to deliver earlier if they can. From our side everything is in place, we have our management servers ready in Cape Town, as well as the fibre link. Durban link should be ready before the IPC goes live, as far as I am told. I don't have an ETA on the PE-CT link just yet, but I'll let you know when I do.

I will also let you guys know when caching, CDN and Google Node are due to be in place, but from what I am told that could be a little later, I'm also waiting for feedback on this.

Hi Afriman

I'm an Afrihost subscriber currently on the 50gig for R399 package. The reason for this, is that I was running away from the shaping as it is horrendous. I have a 4mbit line

I have a two questions regarding the uncapped packages. (I will typically use 50 - 100 gigs a month)

1. What is your shaping policy? (i.e. Shaping times, and what the threshold for throttling is)
2. Difference between business uncapped and normal uncapped (especially shaping wise)
3 What is the priority for data when shaped. I love Youtube, is it affected?

I do a lot of downloading from file sharing websites btw.

Incorrect, MTN have had a decent failure at their data centre in rosebank. About four of their air conditioners died and they had to shut down the one server room. This happened a few years ago.

Do they have anything to do with the MTN Business data centre in Gallo Manor that falls over regularly?
