Afrihost Uncapped ADSL Feedback

Hi Guys - any advice when canceling with Afrihost? Think I need to cancel after 25th of the month? Just want to make sure I do not miss anything in their small-print.

Been with Afrihost for ages on capped, no free mystery gift for me, as for others recently. Maybe because I complained too much. meh. I am sure my name just fell off their list of favourites. O well. :)

Anyway, not why I am cancelling (that would be pretty petty - LOL!). I want to go uncapped from my current capped account with them, but with all the hoo-ha about their bad uncapped performance, I decided to go Telkom with their new prices from 1 Feb.

I will move from capped 4MB, 7GB (6+1) account on Afrihost to a 2mb uncapped Telkom account. I need more data and buying additional 2GB at R30 every time is just not doing it for me. The uncapped option from Telkom actually works out CHEAPER... I can live with 2mb vs 4mb now, so not an issue.

I'd give the Uncapped account from Afri a try ( at a reduced rate ) before moving and cancelling. I can tell you for every complaint here there's a 100 other users likely deadly happy with their service me included

Thanks @PsyWulf - I am always open to good value for money deals (call me cheap :) )

If I compare prices - Afrihost works out pretty expensive - R137 more - if all my calculations are correct:

Telkom 2mb (new price):
R 148.00 (Line Rental)
R 459 (Data and ADSL line rental)
Total = R 607.00

Afrihost uncapped 2MB:
R 148.00 (Line Rental)
R 299 (ADSL line rental)
R 297 (Afrihost Data)
Total = R 744.00

Afrihost uncapped 2MB:
R 148.00 (Line Rental)
R 299 (ADSL line rental)
R 297 (Afrihost Data)
Total = R 744.00

Slight thing you may have missed,you can Bundle the line with Afri and the account,making it R497 instead +148 rental,though admittedly the new telkom prices are quite a good value proposition too :)

Thanks - yes, my line is with them currently, but I did not attribute any discount in my calculation, thanks for pointing it out.

Let me see what is the best Afriman can come up with...

Afriman can refer you to their site with a link for 80% off the bill for 1 or 2 months if memory serves,a good trial time

Today is the 25th... guys is it too late to cancel my AH uncapped account effective end of Jan?? :confused:

Thought one needed to cancel AFTER the 25?

Can't really find anything on their website...

balrog, it says on their website:

No Contracts, No Catch.
We don't lock you into any long term agreement. If you change your mind about us, you can simply cancel before the 25th of the month.
So perhaps we are too late to make it effective 1 Feb? :(

I wanted to cancel because the DL speeds are crap before midnight and I might be working from home in Feb and Telkom is now cheaper on uncapped as of 1 Feb! I'm not on a bundle deal with AH but I would take a bundled deal with Telkom as save myself R140 pm.

Thanks ryan411! :-). Your exact experience is the type of experience I wish to avoid...

:-( Dang - ok. I will then cancel towards end of next month and avoid the rush of peeps joining Telkom 1 Feb - LOL!

Thanks to the guys who PM'ed me with some details I could replicate.

Here's what I found though. I used the same account (to make sure I have the same profile that our QoS manager would pick up) and downloaded the same files on a normal ADSL line. Where speeds are reported to be btw 6-20kbps (bits, not bytes). One the same file I got about 218kbps (with a peak around 270kbps) and I also got about 890kbps on a 4Mbps (which I tested just to get an idea).

In general, are you getting these speeds while running other services? Do the results differ if you cancel or pause other services?

Just trying to see what is happening here?

Today has been great for me. I've downloaded 12GB starting around 9 this morning, with my sabnzbd throttled to 500KB/sec (and it maintained it), while playing Diablo 3 with 200ms latency.

I did a 180 and signed up for the bundled deal (2mbps ADSL line transfer + uncapped account). Afrihost... don't make me regret this! :whistle:

Bundled cost of Telkom vs Afrihost is neglible plus hopefully easier to deal with AH instead of Telskum!

OK, I cancelled - will check how things are on the Telkom side on 1 Feb. Who knows, once vibe for Afrihost uncapped improves around here, and pricing competitive, I might be back. Kudos to Afrihost, service wise they have been good, especially with AfriMan around.

@ryan411 - the new Telkom pricing coming into effect in Feb is cheaper by quite a margin - check earlier calculations.

another Afrihost cancellation.

This is what pushed me.

5meg download from Wordpress.org (latest version)

I get that my line is stuck on syncing at 1.4meg, i get that i'm on a 2meg uncapped. But the above is poor. Anyway come Feb i'll trial Mweb, then trial Plugg and decide between the two.

Only been connected 3 days now, 4meg line, uncapped

I have no complaints, their service is running great
