AfriHost uncapped ADSL here soon

Guys we cant afford to be loyal to anybody at this stage, the prices are still too high, remember that customer loyality is just a business mechanism, dont fall for it. At this point in the game allegences must remain liquid, the ISP's need to realise that they can lose entire user bases overnight if they dont stay competitive and drive these, STILL EXPENSIVE, prices down!

We can settle when 8Mb uncapped including line rental is R299.

I see a day in the very near future, when such an account is handed out free with furniture/appliance/real estate and various service contract deals... ;)

Mmmm, I don't trust MWeb as far as I can throw them... read the fine print!
Also Afrihost has let me down BIG time this week. I am at the point of switching back to SAIX BW and moving hosting back to Hetzner.

Can you be a bit more specific on what AfriHost did in letting you down BIG time ? Was it bad support ?

This is unfolding faster than I expected. I have accounts with Telkom, Mweb, Web Africa and Afrihost, with enough cap in reserve to see me to month end.
I will not make any moves till then.
It will be interesting to see if Telkom under cut them all, as they can and probably do cross subsidize with the line rentals and ipconnect charges.
They certainly won't react quickly though.

Yes, we have forgotten about good-old HellKom ! They will milk the cow till its dry  and looks like their friends at WA are also trying their luck with holding onto the t!ts for as long as possible

The sun set long ago, but I can feel the heat rising from the Webafrica Boardrooms all the way in the northern suburbs.

They "have to" drop pricing in order not to see their business evaporate over the next 3-6 months. As will all the other major ISPs.

I wonder if this will have an effect on the very slow moving mobile and fixed wireless people?

Well if you went to Europe a few years ago, you'd find slow HSDPA with 4GB/sec + softcap (throttled) speeds as standard with 10-25Mb/sec uncapped ADSL offerings. I don't think there will be a significant hit except for those who were using 3G instead of ADSL in home routers where ADSL lines were available.

I really enjoy this company and hope they get enough people signing up to compete with the big boys

Hold on a second, you ADSL users have been spoiled with goodies recently, time for something to happen to us HSDPA guys.

Increased latency & cell shrinkage coming your way soon! Seriously dude - for serious internet, get a room.... with a landline.

Eish this uncapped story is going to get expensive. You guys are forgetting the hidden costs

Think of all the new hard drives we are all going to have to buy...
Gifts for girlfriends/wives to apologise for spending so much time on the internet...
Factor 50 sun cream for those times when we are forced to leave the house to buy food...

I am worried about the shaping comment, I pulled down a Sony software package 100MB it came down at 40/kbs on 4mb adsl connection. Youtube videos buffer all the time. I am sure MBB will do some testing in the near future to see which ISP is providing the fastest service. I love what Afrihost did for the Internet and I want to stay with them but 40/kbs on a 4MB adsl line is not good enough.

The good thing about afrihost is - you can have more than one connection so I can work from home and the office can also stay connected, mweb can't.

My plan was to cancel my Afrihost (INT) and WebAfrica accounts today and sign up with Vox or Mweb for a 4Mbit account from the end of this month. I'm SO glad this 'announcement' was made today as I'll definitely now be taking an uncapped account with Afrihost!:D

I called mweb yesterday to find out more. there month to month you still have to give them 30days cancellation to you still screwed for 60days by them if there service suck. AFRIHOST SERVICE IS TOPS Tried DIGICHILLI ____ SLOWWWW.

that's current t&c's mate. where did you get the ones for AH uncapped?

consumers make very emotional purchasing decisions on this forum.
if there's a lesson that can be learned from the last 6 months, it should be that you don't take the first thing that comes along.
telkom is a dark horse on this one. and i'd hold out till they make an announcement. i'm willing to wait a month.

afrihost's announcement was clearly rushed, showing that keeping their consumer base is more important than being sure of delivery.
but let's take their word for it. they haven't disappointed me so far. and if they don't get enough users, they can always do an openweb and resell mweb.

please don't judge @wamatt or anybody else till they have had a chance to defend themselves.
if he announced next week that wa would drop to below vox prices, who would be eating humble pie then?

i'm not sure that the assumption that mweb's users are all mom and pop is necessarily true.
your regular mom and pop won't do more than 3gb per month.
it is still cheaper for them to use afrihost capped than mweb uncapped: R240 vs R350 on 386kbps
even if they're doing 5gb it's still cheaper with afrihost.

surely these latest announcements are good news for wug and wireless hotspots?
it would be great to see a surge of alternative wireless access from these providers.

/congrats to afrihost.

/well done to mweb, vox and openweb.

so we have 4 isps now, geuss webafrica going to have to order some pie...

My congrats go to:
1st place Afrihost for kicking off this massive price war
2nd place Digichilli for giving consumers a whiff of affordable uncapped and throwing the cat among the pigeons
3rd place Mweb for being the first money grabbing ISP to fix their supplier centric model

As long as you can control the shaping you can still give a decent service to the majority of your users,” said Payne.
Interesting point, but the more suppliers, the better for consumers, provided the uncapped service isn't spread too thinly there should be enough subscribers to sustain the model.

Telkom is the reason we have had to wait so long for affordable uncapped. Sorry, but too late for them IMO. About emotional consumers - it's exactly that reason that you may go for Telkom if they offer you a cheaper product. People quickly forget who has fought the war when things start looking up.

+1, I will wait - no reason to change from Afrihost now. At first I thought "I'd better get in with Mweb before they close the door"... now I'm not so sure...
My only question is - will they (AH) be able to compete with MWEB bandwidth wise? We need some speed comparisons when this is over...

Any software dev's out there want to create a service based MyBB app that periodically (every hour) pings a series of servers and does a 1Mb upload / download to test real time speeds at different times of the day? The app can send the results to a web service or something hosted by MyBB's ISP (Please RPM?). An admin screen on the client side where a few questions about your ISP, line speed, location can be entered would be awesome. Then a quick dashboard on MyBB comparing speeds and latency of similar uncapped services....

Please please please?
