AfriHost uncapped ADSL here soon

. . . .just cancelled my Axxess Uncapped. Now waiting for tomorrow to hear what Afrihost brings to the table - if not to my liking ( doubtful ) - I'll go to Mweb..

By moving to the ISP offering the best deals - you're forcing other ISPs to offer similiar deals - nothing wrong with it.

Exactly it is purely basic business. Something people can't seem to grasp

Slightly off topic - how shaped is Afrihost during the day? I have a 10GB account - and am getting 20KB/s on torrents today (a public holiday)- last night I was getting 300.

Torrents have been crappy for a couple of days now. Direct downloads are running great, but lately I struggle to get full speeds on torrents.

Avg'd 16kb/s for the day - not cool on a 4mb line, thats less than 5% capacity.

Is it only slow today or has this been going on for a while? My torrents have been crap for around a week and a half now. Granted, I'm only on a 384k line, but I'm getting ~10kb/s on torrents that have thousands of peers/seeds where before I was getting 38kb/s. Any other Afrihost users having similar problems?

Am currently on SAOL's uncapped 384 and SAINET per gig for my 4MB - SAOL is good, SAINET... not up to scratch in the speed department.
Subsequently I have cancelled both (unfortunately both require a 1 month calendar notice cancellation so I'm stuck til end of April).

I think Afrihost is tops around here fighting the good fight for the public when it comes to bandwidth and I'll be moving over to them for both.

Torrent hasn't been to bad 2day.. on a 4mb line, did hit a few lows of like 20kb/s but not going more than like 200.. avg about 130kb/s..
but now (time of post) i'm averaging 350kb/s... So must be the shaping
And the torrents are healthy

A question that may seem silly but isn't really.

I have found almost everything I need via direct downloads (either rapidshare or megaupload links)
I am getting about 410-430KB/s
I have not needed torrents. Ofcourse my rapidshare account is a paid one so I suspect the answer lies therein

it's true direct is usually alot faster.. but people use torrents cause they free hahaha.. well thats my reason anyways..
That waiting time combined with no parallel downloads, makes me only use rapidshare occasionally.

Quick tip to avoid the waiting times affecting you.
Download JDownloader and automate your downloads.
JDownloader 'negotiates' with Rapidshare and Megaupload. All you need to do is cut & paste the rapidshare link into JDownloader, press start and away you go.
JDownloader supports the Rapidshare "waiting time" and CAPTCHA recognition, enabling batch downloads without user input (cut from Wikipedia but true)
Obviously your downloads will still be serial. Well you can have 1 rapidshare and one megaupload running in parallel. (and one hotfile etc etc.)
The important point is that the you can request 20 (or even a 100) downloads and JDownloader will do the rest for you.

I have used JDownloader on a Mac and can vouch for it there. It is available for Windows and LINUX but I have never tested it.

I got a torrent at 380Kb yesterday still, very well seeded though.

The free rapidshare service only lets you get 1 file with 1 thread at a time and then you have to wait quite a while before you can download another file and each file can only be 100Mb max.. so torrents are really better if you don't have an account. Some other file hosts are better though.

What if tomorrow never comes, or comes after the end of March?

Beware the ides of March, but we are past that, so tomorrow should be fine :)
It is taking forever though and I only have 3Gig left for the next 9 days unless I upgrade

Thanks for this, downloading it right now

Torrents = sharing is caring or in other words your e penis comparing who uploaded the most :p

... I never understand those who download more than they need. You don't buy clothes you never wear, so why should you download stuff you don't even use/watch? ...

Personally, I think even the "power users" will get excited for a little while and get used to the idea of having the whole internet at their disposal and when they do, they will only download what they actually use. I don't believe that anyone, in his/her right mind, would download contents they would have no use for.

I'm just worried for people like me who signed a deal with the devil and still have a very long way to go til that deal expires. I just hope when Hellkom responds, they will free us. I also hope Afrihost will come through for us, coz I will just downgrade what I have on TI to Do 1 and upgrade my 1GB AH to uncapped.

The contract that I signed with Hellkom was for TI not the line, right? I mean, I can easily go for Afrihost all-inclusive uncapped deals even if I'm still tied up by the TI contract, right?
