Well I must say, I am very unimpressed about the way Afrihost have handled this upgrade.

On Monday morning, I selected the option to upgrade my line to 20Mbps, and within about 10 minutes I was kicked off the Internet.
Shortly afterwards, they sent me a bill of R299 for the 20Mbps line, for December.

After some troubleshooting why my ADSL status was giving status "unconfigured", I eventually found under clientzone that it said my line was VDSL.
After researching VDSL, I found that I would probably need to fork out and purchase a VDSL modem.
I called Afrihost, and they told me to look at Incredible Corruption, and Matrix Warehouse.
I looked around local shops (IC included), and the cheapest they were going for was R1800.
I eventually found some ZyXEL on WebAfrica and Axxess for R999, both companies situated in Cape Town (far for delivery)
I asked Afrihost if they would be able to convert the line back to ADSL for me, in the meantime, but they said no.

So I ordered the ZyXEL router for R999, and having done an instant EFT before 12:00 to their same bank, they told me I would receive it by the next day (Wednesday the 30th).
Anyway, it's Thursday now and I still haven't heard a word from the courier. I asked for a tracking number, and the website says unable to track parcel.

I am very disappointed in the way Afrihost left me in the dark here, and that I haven't been able to use my Internet for my work all week.

I have upgraded and down-graded lines with Afrihost before. You can't do both in a short space of time.

Additionally, I would have checked my router before upgrading. We use a D-link 2750u and went from 10mb to 20mb, no problem. Router is about R700.

You went from ADSL to VDSL it seems.
You should actually be glad about it as it allows you 2Mbps upload instead of 1Mbps and has less overheads so you will get closer to line speed.

The D-link 2750u does not support VDSL. You should be able to ask for ADSL modulation instead of VDSL if you really want to, but I would suggest against it as you are already getting the new router.

Only telkom have the control to change your line back to ADSL Modulation... Afrihost's hands are tied in this respect.

I have the 2750u and I'm on 20mb VDSL and it works fine .

So am I right in saying or thinking, that you upgraded to VDSL, before checking if your modem could handle it?

No you are wrong. I upgraded to 20Mbps ADSL, only after the upgrade was done, it told me it was VDSL.
As far as I understand, 20mbps and 40mbps are VDSL. So does it say on the AH website that it's Adsl?

Could we have your line stats? I am pretty sure you are not on VDSL as that router does not support it.
Do note that ADSL2+ can achieve 20Mbps download and 1Mbps upload, on VDSL you should see 2Mbps upload.

ADSL are all speeds up to and including 20Mbps, VDSL is 20Mbps or 40 Mbps with higher than 1Mbps upload. VDSL should be able to go higher than that but Telkom does not currently allow it.

I was just looking through the Afrihost website again.

They clearly need to make the distinction between ADSL and VDSL, because on the first page it says my line is 20Mbps VDSL, but then when I say test line, it says it's an ADSL line. :wtf:

Have you spoken to the reps on the Afrihost thread?

Not in the office to access the router, but I think you may be right - only 20mb down / 1mb up, so must be ADSL 2+, though Afrihost website shows my account as 20mb VDSL.

:(

It definitely sounds like we could have been of greater assistance to you during this process. Did you place an order for the Zyxel from Afrihost?

We will usually need to wait for the payment to clear before we are able to ship the modem.

It doesn't say that it's not ADSL.

It doesn't say it is ADSL either.

The problem with this is that one cannot tell what modulation is available at the exchange, it depends on the exchange/what ports are available and the techs mood when he picks the port/sets the modulation.

No, they can set it remotely. When I had issues with VDSL I just called Telkom and they swopped me to ADSL2+ sync while I was on the line with them.
