Saw this thread and I’m on Afrihost

I know nothing about news servers or Usenet (how does this differ from torrents ) would love to get an insight into this

What is it used for and how is it used , guessing it’s free on Afrihost and or can I use my oracle server for this

Thanks
Best to read up on the interwebs about this dude. Afrihost are merely providing a local backbone and you would still need a NZB provider ect to get this setup.

Its great in the "Arr" world off applications as NZB's are relatively easy to automate but both have their places. There is more info out there than my brief few words here :)

Thanks soprono, will do guessing the NZB provider is an additional cost

The whole package traditionally does come at a cost yeah.

DrunkenSlug a proper provider around R300 a year and then Newsgroup Ninja backbone amount the few out there around R1000 give or take promotions ect. So up to the user to decide on value vs. cost ect.

Only saw this thread now - so I assume that you did switch to a new server. Can I ask if it is still limited to 8 connections? I have been using the afrihost news server for about 2 years now with my config set to 10 connections.

It's not moved yet.

I'm thinking of moving it to a 90TB storage server we have idling in Durban. The second option is CPT where we have a couple of 300TB storage servers and both options CPT or DUR have 10Gbps links already.

It's always been 8 connections. If you set more then that the extra connections are queued and not rejected so you won't get errors in you usenet client.

More than 3x the storage in CPT sounds like a good plan

I want to add a poll to see who still uses the Afrihost Usenet server.

The current machine this server is running on doesn't have that much space for caching and I want to see if I can use an old game cache machine we have in Teraco to use as the Usenet server that will have more cache space.

news.afrihost.com

I use it all the time. One of the main reasons I prefer to be on afrihost.

Check out r/Usenet to get you started and clued up.

I will only be able to do CPT around January because we need to go to CPT for Netflix cache upgrades so Durban might be the quickest solution but I will keep the thread updated.
Thanks for still offering a usenet server. Usenet may not be something the majority of users get into these days, but I definitely appreciate it and consider it one of the advantages of being with Afrihost. Sure, those who want 5000+ days retention will have to sign up with a specialist like Eweka, but for those just looking for newer articles it's very useful having a server provided by our ISP (and for occasional users it also opens up the opportunity of using Afrihost topped up by a block account from a long retention provider). Anyway, more storage would of course be great if possible.

Hi.
Just switched my MetroFibre Service from AXXESS to Afrihost. With AXXESS news.internet.co.za was working well, but news.afrihost.co.za / news.afrihost.com (same?) gives "Server closed connection" (or "Cannot connect to server news.afrihost.co.za [502 Permission denied 100.103.66.70]") in SABnzb - is it still working, down/discontinued, going to work again (in the near future)?

When you say "Just switched" how long was the period of time between when you last were on the Axxess connection and when you tried the Afrihost news server?

I've noticed when using a VPN and then coming off it that it takes a few minutes or longer (not sure exactly) before the Afrihost settings will work again.

That said I did notice some intermittent issues regardless late last night (without any VPN involved).

Edit: to answer your original question it usually works fine without issues.

It has been a but spotty lately. Timeouts and slow performance.
