Can anyone give feedback on the performance between these 3? I'm ideally looking at capped solutions of around 300-500GB. I will mainly use the account for streaming (Netflix, Hulu and Youtube), as well as international gaming (Wow/Diablo 3 mostly). My main priority is low latency and stability, P2P is not a huge concern. I am also located in Cape Town.

I see that Crystalweb has 3 capped levels (Home, Business Standard, Business Premium), Vox has 2 (Business/Consumer) and Afrihost appears to only have the 1, I don't mind paying more for the most expensive level should it have the best performance.

So any recommendations?

I use Vox capped, they are awesome! I get lowish latency for Diablo - around 230ms.

they also offer free download after hours which helps. Very happy with them. I hear crystal web is also good.

I wouldn't trust the Afrihost latency, had them for a while - it was really bad! stay away!

Hi Nookie,

Please PM your details we can assist with setting up a trial account for you which can be tested over a 5 day period.

Awaiting you details :)

I don't recall webafrica being a part of the comparison?

My vote goes to crystal

I am on Vox, but based on what I've seen and read, Crystal may be your best bet.

(I'm not with them 'cos I have a very good deal with Vox)

I have a CrystalWeb Business Standard capped account (225GB).
No issue with it, it always seems to perform at or near line speed (14-20MB depending on Telkom's mood).

As with most things, your experience will differ based on where you are (Cape, JHB, Durban, etc.) so while something will be perfect for someone it doesn't mean it would be great for you.

Personally I would suggest signing up for the Vox Friday Special today, and using that account. If it works fine then keep it as they are really well priced. You can always swop over to another ISP at a later stage, as their prices are pretty much fixed.

Think about Axxess too, owned by Afrihost but without the headache.
ADSL 150+150GB plus midnight - 6am uncapped.

Last month I did my 300gig cap plus another 300 gigs and any time I checked my 8 meg line was downloading 750kb/s to 800+ kb/s P2P. So getting 95-100% of what my line is capable of at any time.

Gaming with D3 and Dota 2 I didn't notice any lag.

I have to say they really impressed me.

Afrihost is perfect for YouTube. :)

Their products are also very cost efficient when you buy large bundles and pair it with AfrihostPlus which doubles your data at R99. You won't be disappointed should you choose them.

I am going to weigh in with a vote for CW, purely because they are the best ISP I have ever been with in terms of gaming performance and VoD.

Super high quality and commitment. Check out their trial account. Cape Town based and I usually get about 200ms in D3 (sometimes even the fabled 180ms). Generally no lag issues either, even on a 2MB line. Well, other than the usual Blizzard server lag that plagued high lvl rifts this season with WD's and whatnot. Even then, it was still better than my SA party members.

This is my second month with Crystal Web and I can't recommend them enough. Amazing customer service and excellent performance.

My Vote goes to Afrihost, their new network is the best in South Africa at the moment.

im with Afrihost too, no complaints. The new network is very good, and one of the things im big on, is customer service. The Guys on MyBB are incredible.

service is good
network is good
pricing is good

Look sometimes you will run into issues, but for the last few months Afrihost has been solid.

Since Afrihost is on the new network, my latencies are about 160 (90% of the time it's 164ms) to 186ms (while I was downloading :)) from Cape Town playing League of Legends EU West.
Get full speed any time, never have had an issue with that. On the 150GB Capped account.

Oh yea! Afrihost's new network provides the lowest league of legends latency out of any ISP at the moment!

Vox has rollover, while crystal probably has the best network. Would only consider those two.

Crystal. Was with Afrihost before, their network is better now because people left because they got gatvol. Crystal is 100 times better with support.

I am on Home Premium, and they don't throttle, only shape - but I can't remember the last time any protocols were shaped, including torrents - was definitely over 2 months ago.

Correction: Afrihost's new network operates on a different provider and isn't on the MTN network any longer, Not just because a whole bunch of their clients left :p

It may be reliable for longer now, but when the **** hits the fan, it'll still be the old test test test and no resolution/feedback.

Does it really matter? If things turn to crap a few months from now you can just leave. Afrihost will stop billing you immediately if you give notice before the 23rd.
