Afrihost vs Telkom 10mbps or not

I've found that with the Web Africa trial account I've been getting consistent 300kb/s download which is a lot better than the "dynamic shaped" afrihost uncapped. I think I will give the 10Mbps uncapped afrihost a try for November and if that doesnt fair well I will move over to Web Africa capped 600Gb

No way are your 1.3KM from the exchange, if you really are then you have a really really bad line or something is interfering with it - electricals perhaps.


An attenuation of 45dB downstream should put you pretty darn far from the exchange, with those stats you won't be able to get much faster than you currently have. You could try for an additional 2Mbit downstream speed - see if that is stable or not.
 
Well is it straight line or is it via the roads? I checked on maps. Will post it in a few min
 
Thanks Chevron for the comments but I can't get faster than 2.2mb on 4mb uncapped. Called telkom to do a port reset and no difference. The guy did say that he will escalate my query...let's hope
 
I dont think I quite understand the ratios, when it comes to SNR Im assuming it is signal/noise with higher being better.

And when it comes to line attenuation I understand that its just the general signal strength... is that right?:confused:

SNR = Signal strength
Attentuation = Resistance on the line.

So you want high SNR and low Attentuation
 
Also after clearing up the wiring behind my pc (which is along the wall where the modem connects to the phone line) I get my SNR at 11.5dB / 14.4dB

That's MUCH better.

You can try upping your speed by 2Mb/s now.
 
Sigh.. there are some days I feel like someone should start there own telecoms infrastructure company... Who's in? Im sure if we give good service we'll beat out the competition
