As the title says, what happens with the speed upgrades from Telkom? I'm on 1Mbps, which, I'm assuming, Telkom will be upgrading to 2Mbps. My ISP Account with Afrihost is 1Mbps uncapped.

Does anything happen here?

Nothing will happen, unless you are proactive about it.

Actually you may see a marginal speed increase (overheads), but best is to upgrade your account to 2Mb to suit.

This.

We are still waiting for a final answer from Telkom regarding whether clients with other ISP's (like us) will be automatically upgraded. My sense is that they will do so automatically, becuase otherwise it will be a major nightmare for them, and they would need to keep a lot of clients on 384, which will not make sense.

As to how we will treat this, I can say we are planning a major announcement of price and product changes very soon, but I'm not at liberty to divulge the details just yet.

;)

Thanks, Afriman. That's kinda what I was hoping you'd say... ;)

Kayvee and QuikSlver, I suspect they might migrate everyone up at no / little cost. The bottom end accounts would kinda be meaningless at 384. Any idea when you'd "be at liberty to divulge details", Afriman?

At exactly 3 minutes past 2 and twenty two seconds in the afternoon on the 21st of August ... no, just kidding, I'll have to get the go ahead from the branding and marketing department heads. Even AfriMan gets orders from someone :)

We're waiting for Telkom to confirm the details so we can release the info. At this stage I can 100% confirm we will not not be increasing line rental prices, in line with Telkom's upgrades. With regard to the equivalent uncapped data, that will be an awesome surprise ( I promise ) :)

OP was referring to 1Mb to 2Mb upgrade. Pointless at 384, and sure that should be automatic.

And yes, the pricing of the "old" 1Mb to the new 2Mb pricing is similar but that said you probably still have to make the decision at the private ISP level to do that.

Couple of weeks and we will know for sure.

I eagerly await this announcement. Bundled 2Mbps pricing is of most interest to me.

Agreed! Running a 1Mbps uncapped bundle, will definitely upgrade to 2Mbps bundle!

You guys think there might be a major price difference between these two?

Not sure if this is directed at me ... what I meant to say is when you get upgraded, you'll still pay the same amount (for line rental). Does that answer the OP?

Probably wasn't as clear as I should have been. I understand how the line rental bit won't increase, as the Telkom charge doesn't increase. I was referring to the Uncapped account side. If Telkom upgrade my line to 2Mbps, I still have an uncapped 1Mbps account, or is Afrihost going to be upgrading the isp accounts at little / no extra charge?

I think it would be unlikely that we would upgrade the data at the same price. The most likely option would be to elect to stay on the same Uncapped service, or to upgrade to a faster service (in line with the ADSL upgrade) at a new price. At this point, I have seen some of the prices we are looking at, and so far they are much better than our closest competitors who have released new pricing already.

That's pretty much all I can say right now, all will be revealed when we announce new pricing :)

@AfriMan - Can you give us an indication of when the announcement for the new pricing will be made?

We need news! Oh come on Telkom - give them their confirmation already! :(

I'm pretty sure we will announce the details before the 25th or so, but I'm hoping we can do it well before then ...

Waiting for news with bated breath!
It would be nice to go from a 1mb to 2mb relatively free of charge :D

One can dream i guess.
