Who reads the terms anyway. But, as I mentioned before, any new account anywhere, needs ID copy.
Why do we need you to send us proof of your identity?
While we know that the vast majority of our new clients are honest and
trustworthy, the unfortunate truth is that in the past dishonest people used
fake details to sign up with us.
They then used up all of the traffic allocated to them and we had to absorb
this cost. This led to a significant increase in our overall costs.
For this reason we need to have this step in place so that we can
continue to bring you the best value ADSL packages and ensure that
your costs are never increased.
@Afriman
I'm curious, is this done through fraudulent credit card details? Or have people bought data, used it up really quickly, and then asked their CC company to issue a charge-back because they know they otherwise won't get a refund?
The measures are there for a number of reasons - the most common ones we see are incorrect payment details or fake personal info.
They former you test with a R1 payment.
Why would you care about the latter?
I paid for a years worth of hosting recently without anything of the sort. All that was needed were my credit card details. Because that is all they need.
Verifying someone who they say you are is a huge part of keeping all of our clients info safe.
What if someone opens an account under your name, and we don't verify it? I'm sure you wouldn't be cool with us holding an account under your name, even though you didn't sign up.
Same goes for falsified information and abuse of services. Without verification we'd have spammers galore on both our Hosting and DSL networks.
I'd argue I'd be keeping myself more safe NOT giving you real details. That's probably why people do it.
As for the spammers, as long as they pay for it, who cares what they use it for?
Now it's like you're saying you're deciding what your paying clients can, and can't do.
So I needed some back up data and picked up some Afrihost data as I keep hearing how much better they are than the MTN days.
So login in portal, choose package, pay with credit card all painless.
Then I want to log in with my details I get told that I need to submit a copy of ID. So I thought it would have been nice to know that before they took my money, but whatever.
Now I get an email saying that I can't use my account yet as someone needs to verify it.
Really now.
If there needs to be a human element at least make the account live so it can be used until a pleb can lick "verified".
Well whatever.
Cheers.
Next ISP that isn't retarded.
This happened to me last night when i signed up for a R29 (10GB + 10GB) account. Even sending them my cetified ID copy wasnt good enough.....it has to be color.
Cancelling is not an option either. This is the response i got when i requested a cancellation. "I'm so sorry about this, but our system won't allow a staff member to cancel. You can cancel these services through your client zone once your profile has been verified"
How come Afrihost, and for that matter, probably other ISPs have no problem taking your money before they've verified you?
Yes they say they have to verify, but why the cock take any money from the customer before they have done?
In Afrihost's case, it's easy to get you to part with your cash before fairly warning you about verification ,than it is to ask before hand.
Douche Baggery of the tallest order.

Problem A is Afrihost not making it clear to submit an ID copy before payment.
Problem B Chevron not being able to scan a clear copy of ID.
Can anyone else test after hours verification?
