What's your surfing experience been like with Afrihost?
Still good for me, I guess. There's still something missing in the quality of data speeds off of Telkom's lines?

If you wish me to be precise the following amounts have been debited to my Credit Card since 28th December - R163.71 + R29 + R29 + R29 + R29 = 279.71 = R69.92 per gig. If any one would like to see the Invoices they are welcome.
could someone from Afrihost PLEASE remove the rubbish about "Instant Activation" on your homepage? Its not instant, cause now u want a copy of my ID book. Which means, on a Sat afternoon that I'll hear nothing until Monday - and prob Monday afternoon by the time someone wakes up and does their job.
If you say "Instant Activation - Subject to getting your ID book during business hours - and wishing, and praying and the sky turning black" it would save some people like me the annoyance of purchasing on your website and being conned into thinking it will work immediately!
So you have at least tried to verify it with them other than posting on here hoping "someone from Afrihost" will see this post? Isn't that a bit unfair?
Yes I am with Afrihost but if you've followed most of the Afrihost threads you will see people getting activated until late in the night.... so what is this about "business hours"People have even taken photos with their cell-phones of their id books and sent it through... after hours at that and STILL got activated.
Give them a call and find out for yourself

Oh did i forget to mention. I ALREADY AM A CUSTOMER. and had DSL packages.
Hows that for a nail into useless service...
Seriously Rurapente?!? You have been here for a year, you have 1934 posts, you are already an Afrihost customer, but you are oblivious to the fact that they need a copy of your ID?![]()
i wish someone would please sticky this question with the relevant answers. in short.
1) You need to be verified first according to rica's stipulations and obviously the attempt to stop fruad.
2) After that your details and account is then given to you and there is not setup period of other things that must happen.
all isps will also firstly attempt to ID and verify your payment before you get an account anywhere. no one on the world will give you goods before you have made some form of commitment, been ID-ed and given the agreed funds to the supplier.

I'm sorry but i got an account with Axxess a long time ago, and have never been asked for an ID book.
RICA? since when does RICA apply to an internet connection? and I thought RICA ties up an Identity to a proof of residence, they dont ask for residence proof?
now please read this and try to remember it.
“The RIC Act 70 of 2002 prescribes customer identification and retention requirements on both ISPs (and other providers of telecommunication services like Telkom) and cell phone providers,” said Buys.
According to section 39 of the RICA a telecommunications service provider must, before entering to a contract with any person:
--Obtain his or her full names, identity number, residential and business or postal address
--Obtain a certified photocopy of his or her identification document on which his or her photo, full names and identity number, whichever is applicable, appear;
--Retain the photocopy obtained
--Verify the photo, full names and identity number, whichever is applicable, of that person with reference to his or her identification document
The same type of information should be obtained, verified and kept for business clients.
Telecommunications Service Providers are also required to keep records of:
--All the information obtained during the registration process
--the telephone number or any other number allocated to the person concerned
--Any other information in respect of the person concerned which the telecommunication service provider concerned may require in order to enable him or her to identify that person.
There are very few ISPs who currently adhere to all of the requirements of the RICA, and this may come to haunt them at a later stage if the state decides to start policing the implementation of the Act.

As far as I know according to SA law we are not obliged to give copies of our ID's to anyone this includes banks etc, we have just become so used to doing this we never query it. Companies should only be verifying by looking at your ID!
I did not like the fact Afrihost wan't copies of I.D. they do not offer accounts or credit so there is no reason to ask for it.
so what you saying. companies should only be verifying by looking at your ID? isn't that what they do when they ask for you ID ?
you do know it isn't just afrihost ?
Please be advised that effective 12 February there will be some minor changes to the client signup process.
All new signups will be required to provide one of the following;
1. South African ID Number
2. Passport Number
3. Company Registration Number
This information is required to lower the risk of fraudulent occurrences, and in so doing offer a better service.
so what section is this "law" you speak of. mind finding and qouting the section ?
ok im getting annoyed. I ALREADY GAVE IT TO THEM. I'm asking why they would want it again, if their process wasnt short of shoddy.
rubbish. because if it was a rica requirement, like Vodacom, MTN etc etc even existing customers would be asked for their ID book and proof of residence. Axxess is still not asking for this.
ermm, but its not a certified copy, they didnt ask for a proof of address?
You are confusing RICA and FICA
I ordered a prepaid ADSL account with them about two weeks ago, and the payment was confirmed and it all worked fine, and I was using it the whole time. Then all of a sudden I get this email from Webafrica:
This confused me greatly, so I sent them this reply:Good Morning,
Web Africa has noticed that your application is still pending approval. Before your application can be approved we need you to confirm the following details:
- Confirmation of physical address.
- Confirmation of ID number.
- An alternative contact number.
We also require a copy of your ID as well as a copy of the credit card being used. This is for security reasons to ensure that all the details match up so you are more than welcome to blank out all the information on the credit card besides the last 4 digits and the name of the holder. You attach these documents in a reply to this email or fax them to 021 413 1615, marked ATT: Kyla.
Please respond to this email as soon as possible or call us on 021 464 9500.
If you have any further queries, do not hesitate to call our support lines.
Thank you and have a great day!
To which I got this reply:I'm confused. I ordered 1gb prepaid ADSL bandwidth and have already been
using it for more than a week without problems. As far as I know the
payment was already processed long ago. I didn't submit any tickets or
apply for anything else. Why do I get this now all of a sudden?
Okay, fine. It's only needed if I want to add more services. Right? I did not add any extra "services" or anything. I don't even know what that means. So I figured I can safely ignore it. Then I got this email the next day:This request is for moderation purposes. I apologise for the delay in contacting you, we are currently working through a queue that is quite high at the moment.
It is Web Africa's policy to verify each client that signs up with us. We request the credit card documents for security reasons to ensure that we and our clients are protected from credit card fraud.
Your 1GB ADSL account is active and paid for so is available for you to make full use of. However, we do require the documents in order for you to add more services onto your account.
If you have any further queries, please do not hesitate to contact us on 021 464 9500.
This is a final reminder that your application is still pending approval. Before your application can be approved we need you to confirm the following details:
- Confirmation of physical address.
- Confirmation of ID number.
If we do not get a response from you by Thursday 04th June 2009, we would assume that you no longer need the services on your account.
Please respond to this email as soon as possible or call me on 021 464 9500 to avoid cancellation.
Thank you.
What I want to know is this. If I do not absolutely NEED to send them this information, why does it seem that they are trying to scare me into doing it anyway? I know other people who have accounts with Webafrica and they were never asked for any of that kind of information. They just paid and that was that. No hassle. Or is it because I paid by credit card that they are pestering me with all this nonsense?
Has anyone else received weird emails like this?
