Audi A4 40 TFSI
Word from the wise don't....- once you go out manufacture warranty ... your problems will start - mine was the mechatronic unit- and it becomes a never ending story of misery...save yourself the energy and misery.... yep, I was burned, use to love Audi...now could give two tosses.

Same model? I know that the dry clutches boxes are trash and cause the mechatronics unit to fail (common with VWs as well), the 2.0T models should have wet clutches.

was a A31.4 sportback --- bought it when it was still under warranty... few month out of warranty my fun started.... had to deal with an independent mechanic, that everyone and their sister recommended....dude, up to you ... but for me ...never again, learned my lesson.

I'm not disagreeing with you. It's just good to know which models are more troublesome.

I had a BMW F20 and it gave endless problems, luckily I had a motorplan but it was still annoying to pay so much for a car that constantly broke down.

Walk away and buy something with a factory warranty you can extend for another 2 years.

In those 2 years start a savings account and dump as much as you can into that if you don't plan on selling after 2 years

German luxury cars will hurt you plenty in the maintenance and repairs department.
I disagree completely. I used to love 2nd hand German cars that had just gone out of warranty.
The price dropped substantially and I picked up a whole lot of car for very little.
In all cases the repairs and maintenance cost about the same as the golf's and polo's I had owned before that.

Had a Z4 that needed R110,000 in maintenance in less than 12 months of ownership. All under plan at least but it would have bankrupted me at the time if it wasn't.

Must have been a fun experience. My wife has a Cooper S and every odd month something goes wrong and the car is at the dealership for a few days (still under plan). Seems to be common across all their models.

What engine does a A4 40 have? I’m sure there’s a VW with the same engine.

I had a look, they're quite pricey.
That's always the problem, it's a real pity because I think the A4 is a very good looking sedan, sometimes it's allowed to say it will never happen to me and do what makes you happy, surely somewhere they managed to get a couple right? It would be very odd if they all break down after warranty.

It definitely is.

2018-2019 low mileage 35TFSI (1.4T) models sell for about R320k+ with balance of the maintenance plan, which really isn't bad especially when you look at it's rivals or anything decent on the market. That's my backup option.

Drove a E46 320i BMW for 17 years no major issues.
Got me a F30 330D BMW now. Don't care about expensive motorplans and useless warranties etc.

When people talk about high repair costs, its usually the agents that milk the warranty/motorplan company.
Why do they want to fix something when they can just replace the whole unit and make more profit.
Can a whole gearbox break to the point where it has to be replaced? Don't think so, but for agents its more profitable to put in a new one. The old one gets sold off and a good techie fix it for a fraction of the cost of a new one.
Best is to learn about cars and source independent repairers.
