Drove a E46 320i BMW for 17 years no major issues.
Got me a F30 330D BMW now. Don't care about expensive motorplans and useless warranties etc.

When people talk about high repair costs, its usually the agents that milk the warranty/motorplan company.
Why do they want to fix something when they can just replace the whole unit and make more profit.
Can a whole gearbox break to the point where it has to be replaced? Don't think so, but for agents its more profitable to put in a new one. The old one gets sold off and a good techie fix it for a fraction of the cost of a new one.
Best is to learn about cars and source independent repairers.
Ya these engines last forever, the ZF box is good for 200k easily, and oil can be changed on the gearbox to extend its lifetime. Most poeple dont change it most of the time it just contunie to work.

Most manufacturer dealership will not work on gearboxes apart from replacing control units or entire gearboxes. Most work on gearboxes is done by independents even if done via a manufacturer dealership. I know this is the case for VAG dealerships in Johannesburg as gearbox work is outsourced to places like VAG Spec Centre.

You just need to know where to go, so often this is the case. I had an old Audi box reconditioned a Triangle here in CT. A fraction of the cost of the stealership and it ran for a couple of years until I sold it with no sign of degradation.

I used the gearbox as an example as a friend of mine had a problem with a Volvo gearbox and replaceing it was 45-60K some years back. A gearbox shop close to dealership fixed it and it was less than 10K

Even these electronic black boxes can be fixed. There was a guy in Plattekloof Cape Town that did this.
He charged 1K ph and sometimes he just replaced a capacitor that cost 10 bucks.
Still beat the dealers 4-5K replacement
