Hi guys. Sorry....me again! This morning half way to work my speedomitory thingy stopped working! Has been working perfectly...and all of a sudden....he is as dead as a mossie!!!!! :cry:

Looks like my poor little baby will have to go into VW afterall. Any of you guys have a idea what it might cost? Will they have to replace the entire thing or could it just be a loose connection?

It is rather bad....trust me....a gay guy sticking his head out of his window with tongue flapping in the wind trying to get a sense of his speed on the highway is not a pretty sight! So the sooner I have this sorted the better I guess. :-)

I take this is not like the Power Steering lube where I can do it myself hey? :o
 
They normally charge per hour and then for parts, one down the road from me charges R350 p/h so it would R350 plus whatever any parts cost. roughly.
 
You MIGHT get lucky & find that it's only the speed sensor on the transmission that's conked out. If not it might be the gear inside the final transmission that the speed sensor gets its reading from, and that's unfortunately probably going to be quite pricey to fix. Where in the world are you? I know of a mighty decent autolek on the West Rand...

It happened to me once.....

The mechanic tht normally works on my car was away on holidy for a week so I took it somewhere else for urgent work. A few days later I was travelling down a LOOOOOOOOONG hill the next moment there was no speedo. I stayed calm & used the rev counter to judge my speed.
Fortunately for me the mechanic was back by then & not to far from where I was driving at the time. I called him & then made a quick stop there. The idiots had either losend or removed & not replaced it properly. So it wriggle lose when i was going down the hill.

He had already told me on the phone that if it was not a connector I would have to take it to an auto elec place.

maybe get someone who's not to bad with cars just to look see if your speedo is plugged in first before taking it anywhere as VW will themselves take it there if need be & then charge you a mark up.
 
I am sure you are about to hear from the VW salesman on the forum that this is obviously YOUR FAULT, VW's don't break :p

You could pass by VW Bruma. Go to the workshop & ask for Malibongwe - hope he's still there - I'm quite certain he'll rustle up a techie that can just have a quick look at the connector for you, as per CG's post above.

What a clever little girl you are ChilliBitch! So you dont have to use your flapping tongue out the window to judge speed? I just figured the quicker my tongue flaps in the wind the faster I am going. hehe (kidding)

I think there is a guy here in our building that knows a bout cars a little. Maybe he can just have a look for me to see if my speed thingy is plugged in! It has happened to me this year when I was in a crash the panel beater had to replace my radiator and forgot to plug the fan into the power outlet....my car over heated on my way home! I WAS NOT IMPRESSED!
 
I drove my 1st car (old golf) for about 2 years without a functional speedometer. Didn't bother me too much though.
I'm sure a quick stop at a VW dealership could get it sorted or worst case, they could advise on what's wrong and what you'd need to replace/repair.

was my previous car, another City, another time:

Water bottle had a leak, couldn't drive far. Got hold of a mechanic that was 20km from me that said he could help as he had a spare bottle but we needed to get the car there.

this is what he said i should do:

open all windows, if car does have aircon don't use it. turn on the fan on full heat. temp will stay on normal. I drove 30km to him & my car was still fine :)
I was helped on a saturday afternoon :)
 
mmm ok...the guy here at work had a squize to see if my car uses a electronic or a manual thing. It is electronic and he thinks that is where the problem is. He said he can get the new part for about
R450 - R500 and wont charge me to put it in. *Sigh*....been such a expensive year. Virgin Money loves me interest payments . bleh.

what phone you got? Does it have GPS? Can't you use that to get your speed rather? :D

Hope you get it fixed though :)
 
OC its time to get a new car....

btw i drive the same as you.. last few years have cost me a packet

eish ..but we do get attached to 'em cars
