you can put an aircon in a golf it is not too hard

firstly you need to get the compresor and the two radiators the inside one and the outside one you can get them from goldwagen or the scrapyards

then you need to get some aluminn pipes an special soldeersel for it

oh and then you need the gas you can get by the side of the road for 20 bucks

Ummm...condensor? Evaporator?

Hi guys.

I've got a 1993 1.3 citi golf, and seeing it's getting blerry hot at the moment, I'd like to get your guys idea if it's worth while installing an aircon. What would you recommend (does it really work), and where I can get one fitted...

Cheers,
M
A while back I drove a colt 2L bakkie. It was my work and private "car" so I decided then to get a aircon installed. Firstly it took quite a bit of power, and made it a whole lot thirstier. I enjoyed it very much. I dunno where you live, but if near benoni/boksburg, I can tell you who did mine very very professional. Costs R7800 2 years ago.
BUT
Remember it will be R8000 thrown down the drain. You wont get more for that car when you sell it someday. If it was me, I would sell that car now, and buy a newer cheapie with an aircon. You can even get also an older car with aircon for plus minus R30 000.

Yeah, see the problem is, that the golf belonged to my grandfather, and I bought it out of the estate after he passed away, so I don't want to sell the car. Ok, so I'd then just continue to drive it without aircon. I'm not willing to spend more than 4k. Then i'd get some of those fans the old people always had in their cars :)

I would just stick to an open window... no point throwing an AC into a old beater.... I do this the car will be able to power it tho, a 1300 engine is still big, no matter what some fools say. If you don't mind it being slow, then its fine...

well my mom has a 1300 hyandai with aircon, and her car has little power to start :) but i must admit they design the aircons for this little cars well, as it only suffers a little power loss with the aircon on ( you have to go up hills in 3rd anyway :p).

compared to the bigger engines, they seem to lose quite a bit of power.

but i will admit my moms aircon doesn't make the car nearly as cold as my car or my dads, with the bigger engines.

I've been in a small 800cc Daewoo Matiz which in addition to air-con had power steering, and I was surprised how well the air-con worked.

Personally I wouldn't go to the hassle of installing an after-market AC.

I have the same problem. Diving a 2005 Citigolf Velociti 1.4i which I love, but it has no aircon, so I am dying now that it's summer.

I am not in a position to buy a new car till at least 2010. Are there no alternatives to cool the car down? Something that one can plug into the 12V battery outlet perhaps?

I don't think that spending R10k on an after-market AC is worth it, seeing as it won't work optimally seeing as the citi was never designed to have aircon in the 1st place...But surely there must be something else one can do?

Edit: And why do so many of the velo's listed here have aircons? Are they all aftermarket?

I bought a CitiGolf this year, and they do give you the option of a "factory-fitted" aircon as an optional extra.

Really? Hectic. They didn't when I got mine...I take it you did not go for the air-con then?

No. It was like R4k more for the aircon.

I just got the smash&grab tint, central locking/alarm.
No radio, aircon, mags.

Above would have added another R10k to the price in total.

Interesting...R4k is not much for aircon. I wonder how it performs...

I got mine new in 2005 as well. If I had the chance, I wouldn't do the same thing again. If it had a decent air-con I think I might...Lots of fun to drive :)

I've got a Corsa 1.4 with aircon and let me tell you, it saps power big time! Although when you press down on the pedal, IE. full throttle, it turns it off momentarily, works quite well, if the car is cool inside it switches it off while I'm pulling away also up until about 40km/h. I think the cars with the smaller engines probably work in a similar fashion. In terms of cooling power, my moms Mercedes 220 CDI (or whatever Merc calls the turbo diesel) has climate control and it cools a bit quicker but the Corsa aircon isn't bad at all, full fan speed and it'll cool down the car very effectively & quickly.

Aftermarket is a mission, trust me, I wanted to do it on my older Corsa but it's just too much work, you need to either get the complete unit from a scrapyard or else have everything made custom, as in custom mounting, custom crank pulley, custom radiator mounting, custom in dash mounting for the evaporator, it's not a easy job.

Also, car radiators work via the crank, you'd need around 3kW from the alternator to run a household aircon and that isn't taking into account the reduced size of the radiator and small size of the pump. 3kW @ 12volt isn't going to happen.

Well you could probably pick up a proper Citi aircon + everything needed from Scrapyard + GoldWagen but that's the easy part, fitting although not really very complicated requires removing a lot of stuff, on the Corsa it's particularly involved because the car is so small, might be the same for the Citi. Bigger cars are usually much easier.

So yeah easiest option, sell and get a car that's already got aircon.

Indeed. That is what everyone I ask tells me :(

Problem is, it will only be next year that I will be in a position to do that...probably towards the end of the year as well :( There are a lot of hot days in between then and now...

When fitting aircons, it is also imperative to ensure that the heater's valve does not leak - as this will also impair aircon performance big-time. My car's heater valve is leaking, it needs a fixer-upper or replacing.

I suspect (as covered in another thread) that my corolla's factory-fitted aircon needs a service (clean filters etc) as it's not working lekker at the moment (the leaking heater valve is also exacerbating the issue). At least it cools the air down so that it's not that hot in the car, but the con can do a better job than that. Will take it in for a service later this year.

The more modern types of aircons switch off (or go into a lower cooling mode) by themselves when you're accelerating or the engine's under strain (such as going uphill) to ensure the engine's still delivering power. (This I suspect after reading some of the posts in this thread).

The older types still zaps power from the engine, and you might need to switch it off manually when approaching a hill or mountain in order to have enough engine power.

Then suck it up :p - you've survived without aircon, you can survive a bit longer without it :D

But yes, I know it's not nice to drive in a hot car, getting hotter in a traffic jam, whilst world+dog have aircon.
