I installed a air cooler that runs off the battery in my Mazda Midge 1.3 years ago. It worked well but you need to keep the water bottle full. And not forget to switch it off. It was around R1800 that time.....don't have the car anymore.....I have a new one with AC..grin

Who installed it for you? And when you say you had to turn it off, what do you mean?

I tried the fan on speed 5 (max) today, with the hot/cold dial set on the coldest. Sure it's nowhere near as cool as an aircon, but with airvent's adjusted to hit your face/chest area it is not half bad.

I tried what you said last night around six in the evening, after the car had been standing in the shade, and with the fan on full it actually was not too bad. It was not quiet or subtle, but it did cool me down somewhat. I guess the problem is keeping the car cool when it is not parked in the shade first...

I've got the smash-and-grab film/tint and I use a visor for the windscreen when it is parked.

Can't remember..was back in 2001.....It had a water bottle in the front..which you had to fill up on a daily basis...and a switch inside..which you had to turn on when you want to use it and off when your done...but you have to turn it off otherwise the pump runs dry...and that causes problems....Try search automotive air coolers on the net....or maybe call some call dealers....they should know....I got mine done at Mazda/Ford in witkoppen road......

Wow, that sounds like quite a mission. But I will look into it.

LOL...yes it is...but it works well..they install a box with a sponge inside your car....the air is then taken through the box...the water from the bottle is pumped into the box and onto the sponge...then the air blows through the wet sponge.......works almost like the fridges my grandparents had on the farm...grin

Trust me it works..........in the old days they use to make fridges like that..the sides were made of wire mesh..and in between the mesh they had coal...then they had water dripping onto the coal from the top...and when the wind blew through it it cooled down the food inside.......the water bottle on the car is mounted infront behind the grill so that the wind cools it down..then the cold water drips onto the sponge....grin..it worked for me

How many times have you had to replace the sponge? Does it not get smelly ?

Get a Corsa Lite with factory fitted aircon. Not only will you get a car that was developed in 1994 as opposed to 1974 (a 20 year leap in technological advances) but you will look a bit better driving it.

Advice of not much use to either the OP, or me, but thanks anyway

Sometimes you have to think out of "the box".
Like about 20 years out of "that box"

Yeah, it is great advice for people buying a new small car, not people looking to fit aircon into the ones they already have.

Taken the advice and have gone with a reflective sun visor for the front window, and am leaving the window open a crack to let out excess hot air and that is working pretty well...Still waiting for a really hot day though - there have not been many lately...

If I put the same visor on my backboard, laying flat, and leave it there, do you think it will reflect the sun out of the car and cool it, or just reflect it inside leaving it as hot as before?

Well heat is transfered in 3 ways:

Conduction: Conduction is the transfer of heat by direct contact of particles of matter.
Convection: Convection is transfer of heat by movement of a heated fluid. Unlike the case of pure conduction, now currents in fluids are additionally involved in convection.
Radiation: Radiation is the transfer of heat energy through empty space.

Above courtesy of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_transfer (It's faster than typing ;) )

In your case you're preventing (or at least significantly reducing) Convection and Radiation because, the sun heats the car by shining into it and it heats the air (since it's a fluid) that it hits before reaching the dash or whatever that it's shining on, so by keeping it as close to the window as possible you're cutting down on Convection but if it's keep a little further away it should still prevent most Radiation.

At least that's what makes sense to me.
