Well heat is transfered in 3 ways:

Conduction: Conduction is the transfer of heat by direct contact of particles of matter.
Convection: Convection is transfer of heat by movement of a heated fluid. Unlike the case of pure conduction, now currents in fluids are additionally involved in convection.
Radiation: Radiation is the transfer of heat energy through empty space.

Above courtesy of: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heat_transfer (It's faster than typing ;) )

In your case you're case you're prevent Convection and Radiation because, the sun heats the car by shining into it and it heats the air that it hits before reaching the dash or whatever that it's shining on, so by keeping it as close to the window as possible you're cutting down on Convection but if it's keep a little further away it should still prevent most Radiation.

At least that's what makes sense to me.
Wow, quite a thorough reply there :)

I guess it can only make things better hey. Certainly worth a try...

Bit of an update. The visor thing on the front window when it is parked is making quite a difference. Keeps things cool for a while at least, but after 30mins+ in the car, it is an oven again :(

Purchased this do-it-yourself kinda window tinting from Game for the princely sum of R50. Let us just say, it does not work :p

Looking around for quotes for a real aircon again as I might well be keeping this car for a few more years seeing as they have even stopped stealing it now :)

Got my rox 1.4 last week with crisp air a/c. Looks very professional with button that lights up with dash lighting. It works like a charm. Think it is abouth R7k. Just google crisp-air and then youll find local installers.

I've got a 95 Jetta 3 1.8 carb, and you can feel the drop in power when the aircon is turned on. Granted, it doesn't push out anything close to what a new 1.8 would, but I was always surprised by how much power the aircon requires. You can always tow a generator behind you i suppose ;)
