Wow, quite a thorough reply thereWell heat is transfered in 3 ways:
Conduction: Conduction is the transfer of heat by direct contact of particles of matter.
Convection: Convection is transfer of heat by movement of a heated fluid. Unlike the case of pure conduction, now currents in fluids are additionally involved in convection.
Radiation: Radiation is the transfer of heat energy through empty space.

In your case you're case you're prevent Convection and Radiation because, the sun heats the car by shining into it and it heats the air that it hits before reaching the dash or whatever that it's shining on, so by keeping it as close to the window as possible you're cutting down on Convection but if it's keep a little further away it should still prevent most Radiation.
At least that's what makes sense to me.
I guess it can only make things better hey. Certainly worth a try...
