On Twitter (the internet's poster boy), many are acting like Afrikaans-medium classes are being forced upon the students of UNISA 1976-style, even tho that's not true. Why the explicit hate of Afrikaans as a language? Isn't it protected by the constitution the same as the other 10 languages?

During the merger of tertiary institutions ours was merged with one that used Afrikaans, what resulted from that was a question paper where each question was in both English and Afrikaans, conveniently questions started in Afrikaans, meaning I had to search where the English part started and sometimes they would forget to repeat the question in English.

I hated it because I couldn't understand why they couldn't keep the Afrikaans very far away from those who did not want it, but lowlifes probably saved money printing on one question paper. That's my memory of Afrikaans at tertiary. As long as those who don't want it are not inconvenienced I don't see the problem.

Our papers had the questions in English and Afrikaans too. I answered each question twice to double my chances of getting 30%.

Honestly, not sure. Maybe, cause of the burden of knowing that your people led the previous regime and you constantly get shat on/guilt-tripped by the Majority™ for it and so the frustration and disillusionment set in. I mean here in the WC where I live, there isn't a radical self-hatred among Afrikaners but you also won't get the type of people who fly the Vierkleur, Oranje Blanje and the AWB flag either. I would say it depends on where in the country and in what circumstances the person grew up in.

Probably an effect of cultures modernizing and adapting? I mean my parents never taught me these things (they are both in the deep 50s/early 60s, so they might know these volksliedere and stuff).

To be fair, it's probably thanks to the media narrative over the years that anything even remotely related to Afrikaans or other minority cultures is either evil, oppressive, backwards, exclusive, etc. I mean on Heritage Day, every ad that I saw on TV only featured the Majority™'s cultures, nothing of any minority cultures (White, Coloured, Indian...). But again depends on where in the country and in what circumstances they grew up in.

So many Afrikaans speakers that were/are forced to study in English only.

Had Electronics lessons in high school, had no problems with the English terminology, but felt more comfortable communicating in Afrikaans with the lecturer.

Looking at the mess that UNISA and some other 'public' universities have become, we really need more of these institutions.

But once you get to a professional job level a lot of jobs will be Eng or Eng/Afr mixed, it helps kids to upgrade their language skills.

Computer science should be done in English just for the terminology.

Academia is going to require you buy the English textbook and translate back and forth all the time for no real reason.

The Afrikaans study material just doesn't exist.

There's many of these smaller private colleges that's better run.

Despite being a Royal-certified soutie, I did a good chunk of an advanced machine learning course in Afrikaans with literally no issues. The three lecturers for course had a PDF that they wrote themselves and kept up to date in English and Afrikaans. I still reference that PDF if I need to brush up on something.

Given the target demographic of Akademia (working class people), the university would get a huge academic return on investment if they invested the time and compiled their own books. Akademia is part of a movement that wants people to speak Afrikaans, I suspect that they will follow this route.

It's a problem amongst the older gens, most of the younger people (like me) can sing all of the anthem (albeit with some tiny pronunciation errors, here and there).

If they publishing their research in English then they have failed their cause. If the research is not published in English the “university” is ranked quite low.

Id love to know what globally credible lecturers they gonna bring in that speaks Afrikaans. Of that’s right, that means only South Africans.



Reminds me of the time I studied, and actually did way better than ever (because it was not because it was great here teaching) in Afrikaans. The lecturer was a known drunk and on a Friday afternoon session he was clearly wasted. Awesome role model hey but that’s what they had because it must be Afrikaans speaker albeit the textbook, code etc was in English. Just meant his explanations were Afrikaans.

Wrt the whole thing.. it’s all fine and dandy but I’m excited to see this working itself into job descriptions with a req of a degree from this institution. It’s coming, don’t kid yourself that people aren’t that dumb to do it. Wife showed me a few jobs she was applying for which basically did this minus university req.. it was a company which was mostly English & had English customers, correspondence was English too.. haha. Yah we had a good laugh about the stupidity of thinking what is done isn’t obvious and then decided we need to leave SA.
