Akademia to offer Computer Science degrees

Afrikaans will become more of an academic language than ever as universities like this are immunised against progressivism.

The UCTs and Stellenbosches of the country will have their buildings looted and torn down in the name of Diversity whilst this place will start producing high quality graduates.
 
Why is this newsworthy, surely there are private universities offering only Black language courses in a comparable environment to this one, if not, whose fault is that?.... Apartheid ended years ago or is the mentality of" you build something nice and we'll destroy it while we won't ever build nice things for ourselves... " The accepted arrangement in this country.
 
I know some people that worked there. It's a bit of a shitshow. I don't think the students are exposed to it much, but the politics and everything behind the scenes are hectic. Also, at one of the orientation sessions, apparently, they quite proudly displayed the old flag. Also, apparently, in their B.ed course, teaching "inclusive education" the right way, is seen as an ANC mindset... Do with that what you want.

Sure, it's the flag part of the history of the country, but I have to question the agendas of those in charge, when taken in context of the other points raised.

The students are exposed to it. I knew a student that just finished.

Well not the inconsequential nonsense you mention. Who cares about a flag, I doubt that happened. But staff rotation was a problem. They really struggled to get lecturers. And students do struggle as a result.

It did seem like they failed people on purpose to milk some more money from them.

I really don't think so, it will still be the same Afrikaans it has always been, a minority language in the greater picture of academics in SA and globally.

But it's still good for the feel good aspect for Afrikaners.

Computer science should be done in English just for the terminology.

Academia is going to require you buy the English textbook and translate back and forth all the time for no real reason.

The Afrikaans study material just doesn't exist.

There's many of these smaller private colleges that's better run.

It has always been that way. In the 90's we studied in Afrikaans, but had English text books. No issue.
Pretty much like millions of Russian, Chinese, Spanish etc. etc. students all across the world.

If you want to do that fine.

I don't think they should advertise it as an Afrikaans university if you are doing distance learning out of an English textbook and have to translate everything yourself before you write test or assignment.

Seems unnecessary over complicated.

Different languages might work for European countries. They literally selected the language on the computer, I've never seen someone in SA use anything other than English on a computer. Is Afrikaans even an option. And how deep does that go. Im sure it's just cosmetic the underlying OS and code is the same.
 
Will be signing my kids up as they have a "learning center" in my home town.

I studied through UNISA and my only regret was not making use of physical classes.

My kids are being raised Afrikaans for educational reasons as they have access to more quality education as a result as they are not limited to education in one language. When applying for high school for my son, I had the freedom of being able apply to all our good schools in the area unlike parents of English speaking children. I'm also happy with the Afrikaans school he is going to next year (which is also more diverse than the English option).

As mentioned earlier, Afrikaans will become a very important academic language.

Don't think so. They still rely on English text for their academic programs and it is a waste of time and money to have lecturers spend time translating the original source to Afrikaans.

Someone asked why Afriforum opposed UNISA and other university's plans to stop Afrikaans classes on non-Afrikaans programs, but are happy to allow Solidarity to run this exclusively Afrikaans academy. Sure, people say they should be able to teach in gobbledygook if they want as it is private, but still a bit ironic.

If you build something with private money I don't care if you hang up a Nazi flag if you produce results and directly do not harm others.

We are far too concerned about symbols these days while ignoring everything else burning down around us.

The government can displace private unis like Akademia tomorrow if they actually spend tax money the right way but since they are absolutely dogsht useless then we have to respect these private institutions stepping in even if they might do some things a little different to what is currently twitter accepted conduct.

Courses will be taught in the same way as everything else.

The reason this is labeled Afrikaans focused is a cultural objective and you seriously cannot fault them for that.

Again if you are pink,purple,blue, whatever your color or race you can enter as long as you understand it is a Afrikaans oriented so if you cannot read,write,speak Afrikaans then obviously it won't be a good choice for you.

Yeah, it's called freedom of expression. I know. And that's fine.

I have a problem with things like that in education specifically. You're teaching the learners something completely off track, this will have an impact on their mindset and it'll be a question of time before employers also realise this and the degree becomes worthless cause no one wants you're little indoctrinated mind at their place of business.

I've seen CV's thrown out for partaking in political activities as part of being a student, so it's not that far fetched that CV's will be overlooked in favor of a big traditional institution.

Whatever, it's their money. They can do what they like.
