All RAM is opened by distributors??

If its opened, send it back.

I've yet to buy memory where the manufacturers seal is broken.

And personally, I'm not interested in their excuses, the manufacturer has a serial number on the items that the supplier can use just as easily as their own one.

Some suppliers stick their own serial numbers on stock they sell so they can track it more easily. Frontosa (FT) is one of them.

If they want to do this then it would be perfectly reasonable to expect that you will receive the full warranty on the item in the event that it turns out to be faulty.

We often test components and systems for clients before sending them into the field. Nothing like sending someone onsite to do an upgrade only to discover you have a DoA part. Some people appreciate burn in tested parts.

Obviously care needs to be taken when adding your own serial number and testing stock. If you feel your item was manhandled you're within your rights to request a replacement. If it's purely cosmetic then check with iKonicIT where you stand in terms of warranty, run your own RAM burn in tests and if it's fine keep it.

Agreed, but they're only opening themselves up for abuse should the static-sensitive devices/items not be handled properly (at a properly anti-static workstation) for example ;)

Frontosa does open up pretty much everything they sell, as mentioned above the reason is to place their own RMA stickers ongoods allowing them to scan the items as they come in aand pull up the full history.

I have never heard of components being tested though. The connectors on all ram I have purchased have been in mint condition.

Agree with Morkhans sentiments... but then do not state;

"Hi,
Please note that all RAM is always opened to be benched (Tested) at Corsair themselves. And that RAM from the supplier we got your RAM is always opened to put an FT sticker on."

<snip>

Even the Corsair RAM I received locally with Frontosa warranty stickers was sealed and looked 100% unused. Other components / items opened by suppliers have always been perfectly / professionally resealed and usually with "Resealed / Check contents" stickers on the bigger boxed items.

The "all RAM is always opened to be benched" statement is BS.

Exactly what I thought on the benching, strange though is that the products I normally received from the Suppliers in Cape Town and surrounding areas have stickers on the packaging. For any product queries all distributors; I only needed the product code, product serial and proof of purchase and when returned the item included.

I would like to see feedback from Frontosa on this issue.

I can understand when assembling the hardware at the distributor or shop. But, you can have clients go three-headed monkey on you when discovered that his brand new purchase were used or opened beforehand.

I once had the most unwanted experience when I purchased “brand-new” Mikrotik hardware for a huge client installation only to find that it has already been setup with another WISP’s input, the supplier sales staff told me that I were full of… In the end they made things right with me. I am sorry, but being ethical is always the right thing to do.

Hi All, just received Corsair Ram from iKonicIT, their explanation for the seal being broken and scratches on the copper traces is this:

"Hi,
Please note that all RAM is always opened to be benched (Tested) at Corsair themselves. And that RAM from the supplier we got your RAM is always opened to put an FT sticker on."

Does this sound legit?

It's true, not sure if Corsair of the supplier check but apparently they put tracking stickers on or something. I got my ram from Prophecy and they told me something to this degree when I queried them.

Nothing to worry about, still got the ram in my Pc now and have had no problems. They assured me that it's brand new.

Opened packaging does not necessarily mean damaged goods...

This is what I was referring to:

That to me is damage, I do not mean that they don't work, but it has been opened and (mis)used.

This is true.

There are several distributors, Frontosa being one, that *does open* RAM to place their "Frontosa Technologies" RMA sticker on the RAM, this is necessary, should the RAM be returned for warranty by someone other than the original dealer, the product can still be scanned to retrieve warranty information.

This holds true for other products such as notebooks, only here the product box may be sealed, yet the warranty counter started when the distributor received their stock, not when the product was sold to the dealer or the end-user - in this case, even though the warranty is with the manufacturer, it should ideally be booked in with the distributor.

This is not only the case with computer technology, but also network and communication technology suppliers.

This.

Most RAM (and plenty other products) is opened by Frontosa to put their sticker on it to improve the warranty process. RAM like Corsair Vengeance isn't because there is a plastic cut-out in the packaging which shows the Corsair barcode.

But it definitely shouldn't be scratched, and on that basis, I'd send it back.

Thanks guys for the advice / opinions, response from Frontosa Technologies:

"We cut the seals of memory as we have to apply serial numbers to the individual modules, as for the appear to used, the units could have been spot tested by corsair to ensure that batch is working.

Regards
Morné van der Poll
Senior Sales Representative - Johannesburg"

The issue of broken seals is tolerable since the distributor (FT) can confirm they supplied it to iKonicIT this month, I'm awaiting feedback from Corsair about testing of their modules and whether they should have insertion scratches... Still, would have been better to have a sealed unit on delivery.

We order and distribute all types of RAM from our suppliers locally and internationally and never have we received any opened up memory modules or packaging. I'd recommend you return it to them and have them send you a properly sealed unit in return

You are absolutely correct about the Vengeance packaging... even has external SN stickers on too !

If the seal is broken take it back I used to work for a hardware retail store and you will be shocked at what we do with clients parts.

Take it back and insist if not contact corsair directly and they will sort it very quickly.
What store do you work at, so people here know where not to buy from/get service???

:erm:

There is a simple rule in goods receiving - if the seal is broken you automatically return it without payment. If the distributor needs to open it because their admin systems can't function otherwise then it is best to change to a product from another distributor. If this is not possible then the distributor must re-seal the product with their own branding (and not try to fake the original seal back on). They also need to inform you explicitly of the warrenty obligations. This is the minimum you should expect from a professional organisation.

On the other hand, if the seal is broken and you still want to take the goods then a discount should be negotiated. In this case 50% would be reasonable if the warrenty still applies.

Yup this broken seal fiasco is going to put people off these suppliers, myself included. Im still havent decided to send them back, evidence the RAM is new is from the distributors confirming sale date and corsair confirming they test modules, well actually im not sure, the response from their representative on the support forum was this:

" Yes we test every Module on a MB at their rated settings before they leave our factory..."

Not really sure if thats sarcastic or sincere?!

They're being sincere, but they're tested BEFORE they're packaged.

^That.

RAM that I've purchased from Esquire had been opened and resealed as they put their warranty void if removed stickers.

Misc items I've ordered online also seemed to have been "tampered" with and had FTxxxxx stickers on them (Frontosa).
