All things Sunsynk (Deye, Inge, etc...)

Not sure how much it costs on Amazon, but you can get an Orange Pi with Solar Assistant pre-installed from the Solar Assistant site. They also have the cable that you'll need.

Leaning towards Home Assistant with the HASS plugin because I'd like to automate other things around the house, and it'll work wirelessly without running cable to your inverter. They don't seem to support Orange Pi though (or maybe they do and I'm being thick), so will just have to wait it out for a Raspberry Pi...
Second hand NUCs are all over Facebook marketplace and are perfect for running HA
 
Yep, but they're currently out of stock. Works out about the same price ordering the Pi from Amazon and buying software licence from SA.
I went the same route this morning. Some overtime money coming in to cover the cost. Now I just have to check what FNB is going to charge for their "international transaction" fee.

You should get a Global Card. then you only pay fees to fund the card and transactions are free
 
The fans he quoted are rated at 0,2A which is very low. I used 120mm fans rated at 0.07A. Both of these are easy to run off any 12V adapter. I used one of these:

That will be able to run multiple fans. Get a connector like this and wire the fans to it and the power supply just plugs in.

I was secretly hoping for an answer like "connect it to the GEN ATS 12v dry contacts on the inverter and click this option on the display to make the contacts fire off permanently".
I don't have any nearby power points so was trying to find an easy way to power the fans if I went the same route.
Dont feel like wiring in another plug socket or running an extension.

Lol perhaps I should wire 4 fans in series and then connect directly to the battery :p

Do you plan on using a nearby plugpoint or are you going to use Solar Assistant's direct battery power adapter?

Ah ok, that makes sense. I am not sure if you can get power from the inverter itself, but I prefer not to mess directly with it. Luckily I have a plug point next to the inverter that is now running the Solar Assistant Pi and the extra fans.

Otherwise you could use DC-DC and run it directly off the batteries:

This little DC/DC fits easily inside the 5KW on-top of the PV Switch and has been working well since I put it in. Wired it onto the battery terminals inside the inverter.
 
Oh hell, I see my inverter uses the newer circuit board. BMS RS485 and CAN comms are now via one port instead of two separate ports. Will have to use this method for Solar Assistant to work: https://solar-assistant.io/help/deye/2_in_1_bms_port. Looks like the local electronics shop carries the required splitter but I still need a short cable from the port on the circuit board to the splitter.

also is there some way to have an indication (red/green light) for when an inverter is running off batteries?
 
Potentially silly question.

Say hypothetically I've got air-cons that I want to run overnight, and I've got lots of batteries to do it.
Do they need to be on the "essential" circuit? Or can you configure the inverter to push battery into non-essential as well?

I know you could use solar power towards non-essential stuff while the sun is up, but I was wondering whether it could be configured to use battery power to do this as well. (Only while there's grid available of course.)

The other follow-up question which I can't remember seeing from all the solar threads is whether anyone has an idea what the draw from a typical modern inverter 12,000 BTU aircon is (though I guess the answer to this is "it depends" but a range would be nice). I don't have aircons (yet) but I want to size my system (mainly my inverter really) to give me the option to install them later on once the budget recovers.

Non essentials only works with PV and grid and not when there is loadshedding.

But there is an aux load output on the sunsynk as well that can use battery up to a set SOC.

So you can have non essentials + Aux load + essentials.
