Anyone have advice on mixed batteries?

I have a 5kw Sunsynk and a 5kw BlueNova BP battery. I just ordered solar panels and realised my battery is mainly meant for backup rather than daily cycling.

No idea - I'd image it'd screw with the BMS.

Has anyone got the Aux/SmartLoad to work for them? Specifically for a geyser.

Assuming the W is set to 0, so it will only look at the battery SOC% for on or off, and also tick "on grid always on".. My current understanding of it is:
It will be powered from solar/battery when battery above set SOC, grid can be available or not.
But when below set SOC, and grid not available, it will not be powered.
When below SOC and grid available then it will be powered from grid.

Is this correct? Anyone use it like this?

Goal is to simply only use battery to power the geyser if enough available, otherwise use the grid. If no grid, then wait til PV or grid.

The watt at 0 is for solar draw. It's meant to be a trigger so that if you say have 2000w drawing from solar that it should trigger on. 0 seems to be the best trigger.

But the rest of your understanding seems correct
 
How so? Lithiums are generally daily cycle batteries, lead-acid are better for backup.
I think he means for his use case. e.g. if the lights sometimes go out longer than planned load shedding, you want enough battery to see you through. If you're in an area thats relatively stable, you can use battery to save on Eskom.
 
Went into the garage this morning and the inverter was covered in millions of ants - how do you control that? They came from nowhere - we treated our property a couple of months ago and haven't had an issue since. I'm assuming they're coming for the heat.

Sprayed and cleaned everything as best I could - but going to have to add to my weekly schedule to be safe.

Fortunately - I'm in the garage often - so they couldn't have been there for longer than 12 hours.

Even ants want to avoid load shedding!!

Oh my, you will have to try and control that. Note that a lot of insurance policies have exclusions iro damage caused by household pests. If those ants cause a short or something, your Building insurance might not cover the repairs/replacement.

Careful how you spray it, I would use disposable gloves and a sponge.

Exactly. Although my insurance is fairly comprehensive.

I've managed to clear most of it. Not seeing anymore activity. Will open the front panel to inspect later today once I'm sure the outside is clear.

Amazing how fast these ****ers can infest.

Sprinkle Blue Death around the inverter on the walls and floor. That stuff stops ants quick. They can cause a very expensive short inside there.

What about drawing a block around the inverter with ant chalk? Something like this

Spray around the frame (on the wall) with Doom long lasting. They won't come back.

I am a super newbie when it comes to backup systems but I have the BlueNova BP(Backup Power) which is meant mainly for backup power rather than daily cycling and charging from solar. If as you said, it doesn't really matter then guess there is no problem and I can double up with another battery of the same. This would also solve my mix battery issue.

BlueNova also have DU variant which is meant for Daily Use aka Daily cycling. Not sure if I read it correctly.

The battery does well and holds it weight, my issue is mainly with regards to adding solar to the mix. This will result in much further depletes than it currently does. I think I've seen it at 70% at its lowest because of the grid charge.

It will grid charge less with solar and deplete much further. But as mentioned by Ron, if no issue. Then no problem.

You can set it up to maintain a certain percentage and have it charge from whichever source is available at the time with preference given to solar.

I get that but that defeats the investment in solar. But I guess you can't win them all.

I will give the installation with solar a try, then double up the battery if Ron's theory is correct. And report back.

Those yellow ant traps work for me. Dot 2 or 3 around, they take the bait back to the nest and eliminate themselves at source.
