Alleged racist attack on UFS campus

Cape Town – An 18-year-old University of the Free State student has opened a case of assault after he was allegedly attacked on the main campus in Bloemfontein on Monday.

The student’s worried father told News24 how his son had been “strangled” by a man dressed in a mascot outfit.

The father, who wished to remain anonymous, said his son had been walking past a group of students who were “touching” the mascot and when his son decided to join in, the mascot started attacking him.

His son ran off but the mascot got hold of him, held him down and strangled him until he passed out.

The man’s son had to be treated at Bloemfontein Medical for a blocked artery. The man says he believes that the attack was racially motivated as his son is Indian and everyone else involved is white.

The student has already been released from hospital and is back at home.

The university’s Lacea Loader confirmed the incident in a statement, saying it occurred after a Varsity Cup marketing campaign.

Loader said that the matter was being investigated and thus could not comment further.

Police spokesperson Colonel Annelie Wrench said that a case of assault had been opened.

Wrench said that the man wearing the mascot outfit is not a student at the university.

Exactly my point. The guy would only get angry if there was reason to get angry. I suspect that this guy was just enough to push him over the edge and had nothing to do with race, except for the fact that he may have been physically smaller than the rest of the people and thus made for an easy target.

Some indian folks have a bit of a weak disposition - not wanting to dive on cricket fields etc.. Maybe the Mascot was just trying to hug him out of love and he accidentaly broke his arm and rib

But yea, mascot should be tranq darted and locked up. I'd understand if he punched the guy but strangling takes it to the next level.
