Recently went on a guided tour of Rangitoto Island a Volcanic island formed about 600 years ago.

The island represents interesting geological formations and ecological evolution as plants and birds collude to colonize the island.

The top offers stunning views.

Also of interest are holiday cottages or "baches" which date back to the 1920-30's. A slice of New Zealand holiday life almost 100 years ago.

Geology, Ecology & Sociology all in one place, and only a short ferry ride from the CBD of one of the world's most livable cities.

Sounds amazing

It is, the forest appears to be comprised entirely of Pōhutukawa trees, but when you look closely you see underneath them, other plant species are beginning to emerge, under the Pōhutukawa's protection as it were.

In between the trees are clearings with the original lava flows, which basically look like someone dug up a 10 lane highway. Quite surreal.

Is it one of those ecological 'cocoons' that develop in fascinating ways, but which doesn't necessarily spread out far?

I also wouldn't mind pics, especially of the cottages.
