Correction:
The vast majority of systems affected by the WannaCry ransomware were not compliant with basic Patch Management standards.

Private installations by idiots who think XP was the best thing since latex condoms...

corporates do not run XP for anything other than systems that cannot run on newer versions... and even those systems are being phased out where they can be

It is correct. Private users are able to more easily move on. So while there is some nostalgia they're in the minority and I also wouldn't call them idiots as most of them probably have valid reasons.

If their only reason for not upgrading is M$ is teh ev0l or that win 7 8 or 10 is rubbish then they are idiots and deserve to be referred to as such. If the hardware isn't capable that's a different story.

But in saying that, there will be more private installations of xp than there will be in corporates

I have to agree. XP hasn't been targeted at all. They targeted the most popular OS on the planet which is Win7. It is Microsoft's propaganda blowing a wistle about XP being infected.
It was during the WannaCry outbreak that researchers discovered the worm only worked reliably on Windows 7, causing errors on other platforms, including Windows XP, on which most infosec talking heads falsely blamed for most WannaCry infections.

You are wrong on that front, Windows 7 is no longer the most popular OS on the planet, it is number 2 behind Windows 10.
