Almost all WannaCry victims were using Windows 7

The claim has a lot of problems. Firstly, the chart suggests that a sample of just 100 or so users was used. Secondly the sample reflects only infected users that also use Kaspersky. So the headline should read: Almost all Kasperky users who were also victims of WannaCry were using Windows 7.
 
I don't look these stats as meanfull, but if it is true, my comment is that Microsoft is responsible for this situation by implanting spyware and malware called a 'Telemetry' with automatic updates to Win7. People are resistant to enable automatic updates for this reason.

there were an extremely large amount of computers in Russia and India affected, the reason given was they were running pirated copies of Windows and thus didn't get updates

I run Win7, Non-official copy and have had no issues with security at all. And I'm only using MsEssentials.

Sometimes, not doing dodgy things on your PC and just being aware of what you're doing solves 90% of you virus problems...

And I bet the up to date versions of Kaspersky don't run on XP.

The issue with non official versions is that the components designed to verify OS integrity and prevent unauthorised access to the system are the things that a virus like WannaCry takes advantage of. They are also the things that you have to disable and break in order to run the non-official copy.

Windows 10 eliminates the need for piracy. You can download the ISO right now and run it forever with updates, with the small cost of having a message overlaid on your screen, not being able to change the desktop background and not having syncing between devices.

In terms of risk vs reward there is literally no reason to keep using a dodgy version of windows 7. Especially if your livelihood(and sanity!) depends on the machine working as you need it. If you had an official version, you should have upgraded it.

My fiancée learned this the very hard way. Her computer was running a non-official version of windows with a cracked version of MS office. It was almost like clockwork for microsoft sales, because the machine basically became unusable just when she had a deadline for university. I ended up putting the unactivated version of windows 10 on it and buying office 2016.

If you use DAZ loader or KMS ativation you don't need to worry about running updates on the pirated copy. Russian in particular know well how to pirate things. Other factors you should look at.

But was referring mainly to user habits on the net.

I have windows updates deactivated mainly because they are annoying as hell, but should MS try and push something to force me to go to Win10 - TCGFT. I have no issues running a Win10 pro machine. But ONLY when I need it. I don't need it, yet. With DX12 becoming more and more a thing now time is running out for me, but currently I'm still 100% safe /touch wood :o

Not true. DAZ loader do not change any system files, it is completely transparent. However if you worry about running different boot code, you can patch BIOS with a real SLIC 2.1 and install OEM SLP keys. No third-party software is running in such case.

I used the DAZ loader. I could even still get windows updates, but chose not to.

There is a amazing single click crack for Windows 7. Which works 100% on legit versions of windows 7.
This allows Windows 7 to be patched 100% and even made it upgradable to Windows 10.

Strange theory as any activated copy can get updates and not just genuine ones.

There is nothing dodgy about SLIC as it is the same system MS uses. After boot it looks exactly the same in memory as a laptop version. The real reasons here is how MS has put everyone off from doing updates. It will only get worse now that they've also disabled updates on newer hardware.

Probably not a typo, but I don't take it for an advantage of Windows XP. Typical users has upgraded already (maybe except sajunky. :) The only significant number of XP installation is at corporates (despite of Microsoft's efforts). These computers are behind corporate firewalls (so Microsoft shares and other things are not exposed to the outside world), users have restrited rights, Windows behaviour is controlled by system administrators. All above makes these computers safe.

Actually you will find most corporates are running Windows 7 or 8 (if they haven't migrated to 10 yet), because XP is no longer supported by Microsoft.

Granted this is of course reality which has no bearing on your tinfoil hat universe but hey, just thought I would put it out there for anyone who might actually believe the nonsense you post.
