So went out and bought a new Seagate 7200.11 1TB HDD from IC earlier.

Recent issues didn't bother me because I figured I'd update when I get home.

Anyway - installed and straight away it did a 'clunk clunk' noise :/ I carried on into the OS and formatted etc to make it visible and assign a drive letter - which it did. I could see it in My Computer and even access, but it still 'clunked'.

I did a checkdisk and it froze and clunked more. Seems it about to die ... out the box *sigh*

Eish... Take it straight back ASAP. Check for any physical damage too.

You could also run SeaTools (diagnostics) which will give you some info.

If you can, make it a secondary drive and try install the latest firmware onto it.

I'm taking it back tomorrow.

The thing is the noise is mechanical ... don't think the firmware would make a difference?

I would say yes. But perhaps not? ↑↑↑

@Plasticmonkey: Brand new drive?

IC should take it back. Even the ones that have problems dont pack up so soon. Doing my 500 gig seagate ATM. Havent had problems so far (touch wood) but dont want to chance it later on.

Why did you buy from IC though? I'm sure they R400 more expensive vs online?

R1799 at IC ... didn't seem too bad.

BTGame down the hall were R2,100.00 for the same thing.

Lemme guess pavilion? U're lucky u never buy it from BT Games their service and return policy are ridiculous. U would have never been able to return it. I had a sickening experience trying to return a R100 game never mind a R2100 hard drive.

Would've got it cheaper at Pc Zone or online

Take it back and try get a refund.

Then rather get a Western Digital WD10EADS, no firmware issues and it's slightly cheaper too.

Clunking during operation, or only straight after power-up? If during normal operation, then get is swopped out immediatey. If only after power-up, it may be normal (depending on how loud the clanking is and how long it carries on for), as the drive does a short self-diagnostic check that parks/unparks the heads.

You know what pisses me off?

I prefer buying things in real stores ... I want to take it home tonight, plug it in and start transferring data. Incredible now have no stock, Matrix have no stock, Inter Lonehill have no stock, Inter Randridge Mall have no stock - and the only with stock is BT Games at R2,100.00.

So I guess ordering and waiting are my only options ...

What area are you in? If in Jo'burg, I may be able to help - PM me.

I'm in Paulshof.

I must admit Incredible Connection took it back wih no questions asked : didn't plug it in or anything and I had a refund within 3 minutes.

How easy it to return it with you guys? I had 1 or 2 PMs from dealers on here, but since it's a Seagate 1TB there's a 50:50 change it'll break in 6 months ;)

It would be difficult to get a refund, but a swap-out would be easy to obtain.

I seriously recommend you consider the Western Digital WD10EADS. No firmware problems, no 50:50 chances. ;)
