Altech blamed for licence delay

hahaha... Shift the blame...
EFFORTS to create a more competitive internet market have been thwarted purely because legal action by Altech
sure...

Yip, and dear old Bill Venter was named and shamed in last month's issue of NOSEWEEK... very typical spiteful rich old man...

they're trying to protect their monopoly on GSM related products....

Not to mention they have also halted issuing NEW Services licences as well. I don't want a network, I just want to sell the services for pete's sake. But I have to wait for Altech to finish throwing their toys.

If Altech's litigation is so effective in halting competition, then I'm sure Telkom would be doing it as well :D

Up to this point in time the consumer were the loser when it came to icasa. I am glad that altech went the court route to ensure that more companies can build networks. If more could build, we would have better competition and service etc...

I also think it was the correct course of action to take - !CASA needs to realise that it's not just Telkodemonopolies that will take !CASA to court, especially since !CASA has been showing favouritism towards Telkodemonopolies [in particular but not limited to] !CASA giving Telkodemonopolies everything it wants to avoid legal action from Telkodemonopolies.

The path of least resistance is hardly ever the route that best serves the people.
iCASA is talking crap!

http://mybroadband.co.za/news/Telecoms/4347.html

"Icasa spokesman Sekgoela Sekgoela said the court hearing set down for July 29 was not interrupting the licence conversion process."

:confused::confused:
Also read that, but it doesn't surprise nor confuse me at all - it's just !CASA following Poison Ivy around and she hasn't got a clue as to where she is headed.
That is a blatant lie - we all already know that !CASA isn't going to issue full ECNS licenses to any of the VANS.

hi sox

the altech application is not delaying anything to do with issuing ECS licences

FACT: the delay is down to the fact that the Minister has not yet finalised her deliberations as to what any of the new licences will cost despite the fact that ICASA passed their recommendations on to her in November 2007

and despite the fact that the DG was questioned about this in parliament a few months ago and said that this could be finalised the next day if necessary

Well, fastrack it then.

the Altech application is being fast- tracked by agreement between all the parties involved

a view shared by many within ICASA and the DoC

correct

on 19 July it will be 2 years since the licence conversion process kicked off - ICASA have got it wrong and delayed everything without any help from industry and it is absolute nonsense for them to be saying this kind of thing

I've just realised that I botched what I intended to post, what I meant was that !CASA unfairly favours Telkodemonopolies for fear of landing up in court when Telkodemonopolies potentially doesn't get its way, and that !CASA needs to realise that other companies will now increasingly use legal tactics to get their way, so !CASA needs to stop focusing on Telkodemonopolies and start creating fair regulations that benefit all - including consumers - once !CASA realises that it faces legal action from all sides it will hopefully take the middle ground instead of constantly being slanted in Telkodemonopolies' direction.

The Cartels Proxy

...acting for and on-behalf of the incumbents as it's in their interest to support the exclusive and monopolistic stranglehold in the country. What is needed here is for a whistleblower to reveal the secret intra-company & non-competition agreements that this posturing seems to suggest. They have probrably been coaxed to take the intiative as the proxy - as blatant disruptive legal shena****ns like this by Telkom (as a NYSE listed entity subject to SEC compliance) would imply contravention of the US Sherman Act which criminalizes this type of monopolistic and racketeering behaviour by cartels.

The problem as I understand it, is that courts & the SEC in the USA, will not take action against Telkodemonopolies, unless there is a pre-existing court ruling in South Africa that finds Telkodemonopolies guilty of a corresponding offence.

PS: welcome to MyBroadband :).

ARGH! Such a blatant bunch of lies.
The whole Altech case is to grant full ECNS licenses to all the VANS providers out there, which is what the ECA stated afaik, before Poison Ivy changed her mind and said, "That's not what I meant."
What a bunch of eejits

:) i got you the first time - meaning that there are many in ICASA (@ Council level) and within the DoC who think the applications are a good thing

Ok, just wasn't sure since sharing any opinion with anyone from !CASA and the DoC sounds uncomfortably like having been inflicted with an STD...

Anyhow, even if Altech loses its case, I hope that Poison Ivy faces some strong cross-examination - preferably peppered with her public humiliation :D. BTW is tarring & feathering legal these days?

oh i think she is going to be a million miles away

in essence in her answering affidavit she once again gave us a clarification - essentially a paragraph by paragraph account of what she intended

it is a completely obvious fabrication - an intepretation obviously thought up some time after the text which in _no_ way supports it was published in the GG. Complete and total deja fscking vu :|

Altech are rightly calling her on it and it _will_ be embarassing

other question in my head:
- given that the clarification she has offered up is quite significantly different from the understanding held by ICASA and industry, just when was she planning to tell us? If ALtech and WAPA hadn't dragged the matter into court would we still be floundering around outside the scope of the minister's intention?

the depth of the mess is unbelievable
