Altech Node: video-on-demand for R299 p/m

Wonder if you can install netflix on this, seeing it does have all the other internet connection abilities :p

Half the price of DSTV.

DSTV is R1800 + R700 a month without any of the home automation features or ability to order pizza.

Can't do these comparisons until you see the content line-up - it certainly won't take on the DSTV Premium channel, we can hope for the R350 DSTV bouquet at most I'd imagine

Don't forget it's VOD. No schedules.

From the looks of it they're gonna have more content that Vidi has at launch.

Yeah but without the sport (if there's no sport) you're only getting a fraction of Dstv (imo).

Too expensive for mass market but like i always said...Push VOD is the only feasible vod option for SA's conditions.

The Siyaya VOD option combined with FTA tv will be a winner. It'll run via satelite and dtt.

"Node still requires Internet access to unlock movies or episodes from a series"
So it's R3500 + R299 per month...talk about crazy...

I don't get this part. So they give you a 3 TB drive with content on it, you pay R 3500 for it. Then to get more series and movies you need to download it anyway? WTF is the disc for then? Are they saying the Disc is there to constantly update the content? If so, why do you need to download anything apart from streaming Youtube connecting to the net and the likes?

I don't like the pay a fixed monthly subscription fee ...BUT still have to pay a little extra for new/premium content as well.

Unlocking isn't the same as delivering. The content gets delivered by satellite and sits on your hard drive till you need it.

no...content is "pushed" via satellite to you, meaning it plays through a second tuner and your node's recording it. The internet connection is needed to unlock the drm and for transactions (return channel).

It orders pizza ?

In a way I feel like this competes with MC differently (and better) because this does not have the high data cost that streaming services have.

So for people who don't want to faf with the internet or struggle to get a good line then this is an option.

The big thing is the content they have... the fact that they say that they are not competing with MC says to me that they have some kind of agreement.

I don't have DSTV or box office ... what is 'not instant' ... ?
Like 2 minutes?

From a hardware POV this decoder outshines the Explora.

To name a few:
HDMI - 2 in, 1 out
Wifi
3G

I'd love to see the specsheet!

Content is delivered over satellite — Altech is using Intelsat-20, so DStv subscribers don’t have to install a new dish — which subscribers can then watch “on demand” from the set-top box’s built-in 1TB hard disk drive.

Subscriptions cost R299/month and there’s an upfront R3 499 fee for the set-top box, which includes installation of either a new dish or quad-LNB (low-noise block downconverter) on an existing DStv dish installation.

So folks can run this and Dstv off the same dish at the same time?

Looks like it... also means that its not instant.

Will be very similar to box office.
Where do you see that? You need to connect to a cloud based webservice to enable your content. Techically you'll only wait a few milliseconds for the satelite to send the pule/signal to your decoder to unlock the content

I think that content is VASTLY more important than convenience. I'd rather wait a while to watch something awesome, than watch crap whenever I want.

Not setting a very high bar :) ... but that's fine, we now have 2 more guys at the starting line, more likely for one to make an impact.

Very very interested in this.
Will definitely get this if content is good and if they can drop the price of the set top box with a R1,000 or so.
Still, competition is good and the more alternatives the better. :)
