Alternative Cryptocurrencies (General Discussion & Trading)

Hopefully the next altcoin to be pumped so hard won't be like Ripple which is a centralised token controlled and issued by one company, and isn't even designed to be used as currency. It's been great to make some easy money off but totally opposite of what the vision behind cryptocurrency is. We're so greedy that we can't even see how giving an altcoin like Ripple can do so much more harm than good.

Nah, disagree somewhat. It's merely a technology that can be used in any way anyone sees fit. Whether it sticks around for years to come or not depends on the demand for it. The decentralized / centralized angle is moot IMO.

The entire point of a cryptocurrency is that it is decentralised, not to be an early adopter and get rich. With Ripple your money is entirely controlled by the company, Ripple and the banks and governments who choose to adopt it. It's a good tech for helping banks, not the individual.

There is no decentralized blockchain. You can't use public and private keys to safeguard your identity. The value of Ripple can be manipulated any time by Ripple (the company) since they own 2/3rds of the token which they have not even issued. It's not even designed to be a cryptocurrency. It's a financial technology to help banks. In the long run something like Ripple could take away any potential we have now for decentralizing the financial system so that our governements and banks are not in control of our wealth.

Well clearly the entre point of every crypto currency is NOT necissarily to be decentralized then, is it? :Crylaugh:
That was BTC. This is Ripple... It's entire point is to provide security for banking transactions. How can you say the entire point is to be decentralized when it's not?

Where do you guys store your ether?

I use electrum for btc. I like the fact that I can restore the wallet if I experience total hardware failure. I also like to fact that I can print out the private keys. So should electrum disappear of the face of the earth I can always import the private keys to blockchain.info

Looking for a simular solution for Eth. Best comparison seems to be exodus? What happens when my house burns down? Will I be able to restore the wallet on a different PC (with a password or a chain of 12 words or whatever. Can I print out private keys for cold storage and recovery should exodus go bust?

I use Exodus and it can do all that you require, restore from 12 words, export private keys etc...

So I just transferred ETH from Luno to AltCoinTrader. Would this usually take quite a long time to reflect on ATC?

Not sure about ATC but an ETH transfer usually takes under a minute or two. Why would you transfer to ATC though? I'd rather just use an international exchange.

Ripple by definition is not a really even a cryptocurrency. It's a token falling under the blanket of a cryptocurrency for people who don't know better. You even said it yourself. It's point is to provide security for banking transactions.

The reason behind the crypto market growing to what it has, is because of decentralisation. It has been the fundamental key to the proposed and perceived value of what cryptocurrencies offer, and is the basis of the definition of cryptocurrency. A cryptocurrency is an asset that makes a decentralised application or transaction possible without a central authority. Simple.

Thinking that the principal no longer applies now because Ripple and some other centralised $h1tcoins have gained success and are listed on exchanges and coinmarketcap.com carries no weight.

Every government and bank would love nothing more for centralised tokens/coins to kill off bitcoin and the rest. That way they can always control our money and assets and we remain slaves to the system.

Nothing reflecting after 2 hours. Want to buy XRP with it.
