Morning,

The request asking for an Alteritive to Wootware, might get the same respose as supporting Trump, but be that as it may, :)

So i am looking at getting some parts, My PC 4th Gen I7, GA-H81M-DS2(motherboard) cannot support more then 16GB RAM. Unfortunately, I run a few Docker Images for Programming and Visual Studio and the Likes, and 16GB is not cutting it anymore. the CHIP Is Awesome and no complaints. However my Motherboard does not take more then 16GB Max ram, so I am stuck upgrading.

I got hold of Wootware, as i am based in SSW and they gave me a good Build, I Do not game, so don't need all the fancy lights and my Tower sits in the corner under my desk.

They gave me a decent system, but got very pushy on the CPU, "AMD YD2600BBAFBOX Ryzen 5 2600 Hex-Core 3.4GHz (3.9GHz Turbo) Socket AM4 Desktop CPU", they only had 1 in stock and if I did not purchase it TODAY(being Tuesday) they would have to down grade me to a 1st Generation Ryzen 3, that has been "re-released" by AMD. But the Motherboard, "MSI B450M MORTAR MAX AMD AM4 B450 Micro-ATX Desktop Motherboard " would have to have a BIOS upgrade to work with the Released 1st gen CPU.

what put me off is that,

  1. Why push old products, even if they are released, they cant be "technically the same" (this was the sales line i got), if they need a BIOS update. So this nonsense, sales pitch put me off. I find it odd that they want to sell, "flashed" workaround products to make a sale.
  2. I believe that being Pushy and "telling you Buy Now" is the wrong way to go about it, if it must go then it must go.
  3. I believe that the Ryzen 5 2600 is not readily available anyway.
  4. I told them Budget is not to much of an issue within reason, so I don't understand why they where so pushy with this CPU.
  5. They seem to sell thier own brand of RAM and SSD, Teamgroup, I cant find anyother retialier selling this "odd" brand, its not one of the majors and it looks like any issues, you are stuck using Wootware for Warranty.
  6. And they have Gone to Delivery Only, this is smart as we all know that E-commerce do make some extra bucks off delivery, so I must pay for delivery,(Covid works well as an excuse to make a few extra rand) and wait 3-4 days where I can drive 4Km to the office to collect. the parts must go to Cape Town, then get rerouted all the way back to Somerset West.

I would like a NMVe drive.

Does anyone know of a decent parts store, other than wootware / evetech that i can look into, that wont try to sell me a gaming PC.

thank G

If the CPU bothers you, why not simply tell them which CPU you want? "I want a Ryzen 3600. I don't care about RGB, just recommend good parts. Make a plan."

That's essentially what I did and they gave me zero problems.

Rebeltech? Oh wait....

Firstshop.co.za

comx.co.za

But honestly, you probably better off sucking up your misgivings about Wootware and persevering with them for now. It's lean pickings out there right now...

Yes, its not relly about the CPU, its just the sales approche that gives me a bit of an issue. As was stated, its slim pickings at the Moment. I don't know, just got a funny feeling, from my interaction

There are none, unfortunately.

My gripe is they have zero stock.

That and they started to mislead consumers.

This is pure BS:

Add the items you want to your basket, click buy.

If you ask them to spec a system, they will obviously punt products they have in stock and want to move, and which fits your budget. Nothing wrong with that. If you don't like what they offer, choose your own stuff.

Team Group is a well-known brand:
So is Mushkin.

The 2600 is still a good CPU, the question there is what price it was.

The 1600AF and the 2600 are about the same performance, within about 2% multi-threaded, 8% single thread, or so, they're the same architecture etc. just different stock clock and the 1600AF can usually be overclocked to 2600 levels, and the 1600AF will clock higher by itself if there's enough thermal headroom.

Delivery only is fine, we're in the middle of a pandemic, maybe chat with them and see if someone can deliver to your doorstep if you really have that many issues with it.

Look into Dreamwaretech or Progenix as alternatives.

You have a few ways out of this:

1) Find a Intel Z97 motherboard on carbonite.co.za. No need to reinstall your OS or set up your environment again. Just plug and play, and buy more memory. Most Z97 boards can also support 16GB DDR3 sticks, but for all practical purposes you are limited to 32GB due to availability and compatibility. NVMe support is also there.

2) Consider the following combos:

AMD Ryzen 5 1600AF + MSI B450M Mortar Max or B450 Tomahawk Max (no flashing required for support because the 1600AF is second gen Ryzen silicon, Tomahawk is better for future upgrades to a Ryzen 9 3rd gen chip)

Intel Core i5-10400 + Gigabyte B460M D3H or MSI B460M Bazooka/Mortar

It doesn't really matter where you buy these parts individually, so long as they're within the budget you're comfortable with. Both of these combos will end up being faster than your current machine. Something like the Core i3-10100 is also good value, but won't be a big performance boost over your current ship. The Ryzen 5 3400G is also a good option if availability of the 1600AF is bad, but you do get less cores to work with.

The Ryzen 3000 series is a bit overpriced right now, and Ryzen 4000 is just around the corner. Unless you go with Intel, the 1600AF is the only good AMD chip at a reasonable price right now (pandemic notwithstanding).

Why don't you simply add the components you want to your basket & checkout?

What's in a name?

Given they've recently launched, I'd find myself a completely different name, it's not too late, as this one is god-awful. Not only does this crop up, but it's also linked to pills/medication/pharma companies. Talk about not doing research before launching.

When I upgraded last time they also recommended a different mobo setup, but I had picked that one for a reason. I just said no thanks, I'll stick with my chosen board.

They didn't give me any hassles after that.

Why not wait for the Ryzen 5000 series CPU's to launch? Buying Ryzen 3000 series now is buying old stock as well
