Hi all;

just wanted to ask on myBB if anybody ever tried using uber for something other than going to someplace;

is it for example possible to ask uber to help me tow my car if I get stuck?
if I have a tow cable/tow pole and Im about 10-15 KM from home, can I ask the uber driver to tow me with his car?
( I drive a small car and he has usually a corolla)

also is it possible for them to do deliveries?/ collections?
like If I need a part from a certin place, can I send the driver to go there and collect something and drive back with that part?

has anybody used uber in an interesting way before? or is it just me who think this way?

nice thought, never thought of it that way;

yeah, but Im thinking more practical; like if I get stranded, and instead of waiting 20 years for roadside assistance to come,
I call uber and a uber driver will help me tow my car home or to a garage;

I wonder if they do food pickups and parcel delivery. They should start.

The question would be if the driver has the necessary tools at that time and their willingness to do it. I bet they never thought they'd have to tow a vehicle.

I highly doubt it.

From my experience there is no communication between the driver and me while I am waiting for them.

I actually asked the one guy, said no problem as long as you got a cable with you;
just at the end of the journey when he rates the trip he fills in he towed a car; wonder if you get charged extra for that?

one thing I do know is you can uber from JHB to DBN if youd like......

sounds insane but its true; cost about R6000 much more than a flight and car rental but hey its possible;

I highly doubt they will tow cars, there is a real risk of damage to their own cars. You may know how to handle being towed, but other won't. They mainly operate in major cities, so I doubt you will wait 20 years for a towing service, more like 6 months...

As for parcels, again I don't think so. Tracking of parcels is a fairly complicated process, again maybe you are OK with the idea that your package might make it to the other end, however others will want insurance, tracking, etc.

Then for food deliveries, Mr Delivery will do it for much, much cheaper than an Uber guy can do it.

Keep in mind, any activity you want the Uber person to do will have to cost the same as being transported, otherwise it won't make sense for them.

I do think you are on to something with a smartphone integrated Courier service, meaning you submit your "pick up a package over here" request and the closest courier swings by you.

Well, when he pitches up you could always connect a solid bar between your cars without him knowing.

If he asks you any questions, you just deny knowing who's following you guys.

Id be a bit worried by it;

aparently its like uber for packages; closest courier will colect and deliver in JHB or CPT, (no DBN) and lot of the uber guys go both;

anybody got any feedback on that?

Rather sign up to AA and use their app.

There might be insurance related exposure if something goes wrong that Uber will not be able to claim on and they also don't have orange lightbars on top to activate and make the scene safer and and and

agreed; but say AA will take 2 hours for you to get home;
and you have that tow pole thing that attaches and makes it safe to tow even without braking;

i cant see why not? I mean yes there's insurance story, but what if if its an emergancy?

wife giving birth ect.....
