am i being shaped...

hi

i have a uncapped internet account, during the day its limited but at night its meant to be 4mbs of pure speed but i can only get 140kbs on downloads, no where near 4mb speed, am i being shaped??? if i connect with another account i can dl at 400kbs so its not the line...how do i test if im being shaped???

Let me guess you have an Axxess or other small ISP account running using an Internet Solutions (IS) backbone...
Solution is change provider or wait until enough people complain...
If it is not a Telkom/SAIX or hopefully Telkom/SEACOM line (soon) you are inadvertantly being shape by IS's inability to cater to demand.
Basically put, IS only has so much bandwidth they can sell. They sell more than they have and so your connection although legally and technically not port shaped is effectively throttled.
Imagine a guy standing with a hose pipe trying to put out a fire, that is you with IS, now imagine yourself with a Telkom/Saix ISP, you are the fire brigade with those massive hoses...
