In my ongoing search to find amazing restaurants with great food and service, I figured I should ask the guys on the forum where they have been and enjoyed. Oh and adding the dress code will also help greatly.

Place : Woombles
Area : Parkhurst, JHB
Service : 10/10
Food : 9/10
Price : For the service and food, it did cost a bucket.
Dress Code : Smart Casual
Link

Perhaps we can sticky this at some point as a Directory Service :?

You guys commenting on the dress code.

How many restaurants actually have a dress code these days - one where they tell you that you are not allowed inside based on what you are wearing?

And what exactly is smart casual?

Above we have a pizza place with a dress code - really? For a pizza place?

A couple restaurants have a dress code.. I kind of like that idea because sometimes it means the SO gets to dress up and so do I.
Smart casual from what I understand is a collared shirt, jeans are ok but chino's are better but formal shoes ie. no sneakers.

'Smart Casual' usually means rocking up in your tatty shorts and bare-footed with no shirt, may upset other patrons, causing the establishment's reputation to suffer. Toni's probably wouldn't enforce a dress-code by day, but in the evenings they might. It's fare is quite a few steps above the average "pizza place" IMO.

dress codes are so lame. just a way of people pretending they are better than others, imo ;)

in related news:
caffe verdi
wynberg (CT)
lovely food (pizzas are superb)
informal, pub-like atmosphere
QUIZ NIGHTS on tuesdays :D

Actually I have been turned away from a restaurant (which I actually frequented quite a bit) due to dress code. We had just come back from a day out and decided to get something to eat. I was in shorts and a T shirt.

This thread would be much more useful if the type of cuisine is also listed. Example: what does woombles and heat serve ?

This reminds me of one of our trips to India. We rocked up at one of our hotels in typical holiday attire - shorts, t-shirts, sandals, windblown hair, dusty, etc (remember this is India, our expectations for accommodation are not that high). Our mode of transport to the hotel was one of those bright yellow tuk-tuks. The tuk-tuk makes a grand stop in front of the hotel ... which turns out to be a 5 star establishment, where the other patrons rock up in German SUVs. We felt decidedly out of place :)

After checking in, we decide to go to the hotel pub for a drink, only to find open shoes/sandals are not allowed. Those are the only shoes we packed! The doorman at the pub offered to loan my husband one of his pairs of shoes :D

Only place I was ever not allowed into due to dress code was some dutchman nightclub.
guess it was for the best though (not into Hanna Montanna's dad's music).

Place : Yamas Greek Taverna
Area : Somerset West
Service : 7/10
Food : 9/10
Price : Very reasonable
Dress Code : come as you are

Prepare to be welcomed by the uber-enthusiastic owner, Barry, and to be served authentic, delicious, freshly-prepared Greek dishes. The option to go for is the 'Feed Us' for R85 pp, where Barry will ask you a few questions and then start sending food your way! Wine selection is on the thin side, and also due to the confined spaces your clothes will end up smelling of food. Other than being in Greece, this is the best Greek food ever!

Care to name this place?

Not exactly in my area, but I frequent it a lot when my friends from Bloemfontein visit.

Place : The Bull Run
Area : Sandton, JHB (Opposite the JSE)
Service : 7-10/10 (Depends on the waiter you get. Some are so arrogant, slow and clueless. Managers are more than willing to replace your waiter if unhappy)
Food : 9/10
Price : Pricey
Dress Code : Smart Casual
Cuisine: Bit of everything but the steaks and fish are highly recommended.
