Amazon dot gone

NO DOUBT internet retailer Amazon’s decision to stop using the South African Post Office to deliver its goods in SA because of rampant theft will infuriate many South Africans who will now have to pay a premium for deliveries.

Damn, this sucks. I relied on Amazon for books\DVDs I couldn't get locally.

I've been ordering from Amazon since 1998. Partly because the shipping was so reasonable. Never had a problem receiving my goods.

I will not pay a ridiculous premium for DHL\Fedex.

Heard it now costs R400 delivery. Is that true?

yes HavocXphere sadly so, but take a look at www.wantitall.co.za. the mentality of the government is so , i lack words to describe it.some thinks a shower,or beetroot will prevent aids. looks like dark africa has moved south.

Hasn't this article been posted yet? Out of interest, what are people buying from Amazon? Last time I checked they didn't really ship much to SA.

Maybe this could open up some opportunities for local bussiness.

They shipped Books, CDs and DVDs. Which is probably what most people
buy, they didn't ship game and software however. There are other
int shops which ship all these items (incl games and software) at
a cheaper rate and with a cheaper price anyway. Amazon just had that
name and since most non internet savvy people are mistrustful of
many other shops or have the perception that Amazon was the only
one available, well many will have to make some other plan.

I think I last used Amazon 3 years ago and that was Amazon.co.jp
and Amazon.fr

Anyway ...

I doubt it .. on the bright side .. your amazon order is now guaranteed to arrive at your doorstep before your order from most of the SA online retailers will! :)

Aw man this is hilerious.
All that I can say is I am glad my immigration application is all in order and getting processed. Now all that I have to do is hold thumbs I dont get murdered before it is processed.
Africans can have Africa.

Where are Amazon coming from, I get a lot of parcels posted to me from international places and not once have I ever had a theft problem.

SA Post Office service in my view is fantastic.

Amazon's parcels are magnets for theft (the box marking, the full value stated on customs declaration form).
Secondly Amazon uses dodgy shipping for their non courier deliveries.
(They don't use USPS.)

So the actual problem here is their shipping methods, I wonder why they dont use USPS?

They use Deutshe Post/DHL Worldmail. Some US shops also use Swedish Post.

Wish we had FedEx economy courier, half price of FedEx priority
but trackable and couriered too. If Amazon used USPS Global
Express, that would also be cool.

R400 delivery on a R100 CD? This doesn't seem like a good idea...

I have had two parcels ripped open this year by the post office and the goods stolen.
Nothing was done - they give you a useless reference number and then do nothing about it, they don't follow up, they don't respond to emails, they don't compensate you for the loss, they just lie and lie and lie.
Well done Amazon, many more are doing the same - I have a supplier in Hong Kong who also refuses to use the post office any more.
Damn SAPO - you will now have to increase salaries as the SAPO employees have just lost the extra income from the side businesses they used to run.

Moan, moan, moan

I am sick to death of all the moaning, moaning, moaning :sick:which I read from my fellow South Africans. Are you all wanting to live in paradise where everything goes right, come on. So we have a problems, no different to other countries who have their own problems. DO you honestly think that it is only because of theft, which happenings everywhere on planet Earth, we are not unique (sorry to burst your bubble).....its financial baby....purely financial. Amazon is only interested in the bottomline....wake up!!! They don't care about you or "in the interest of the customer"..If you believe that then you also believe that man walked on the moon or pink elephants do hang from diasies on cliffs flowing with creamy dreamy chocolate (oh yes white chocolate)...(spitting sound)

Its true because Amazon's shipping options prices > other shops and Amazon
has more clout with logistic companies.

However, we can't ignore the fact that SA is being singled out here,
not Brazil or Kazakhstan, not even Nigeria but SA.

We really have the mix of paying customers and post office / credit card
fraud / lost shipping fraud scumbags in SA. And our gov. is corrupt to the
core.

It would be interesting to know whether the movie studios, the one sueing Mr Video, is in bed with Amazon. Maybe that's why we have been singled out. Breaking international law which states that we cannot see movies at the same time as in the US. (fishy).....maybe something to do with the zoning....which is complete hogwash as well. Again a money making exercise. There is alwasy more than meets the eye.....

I am having similar hassles with magazines. This month alone I lost 3 out of 6 overseas magazines and 2 local ones.

By management doing absolutely nothing about the problem, they are causing us to return to the postnet's etc of the world. Once again they will be losing so much business, that they will have to invoke another law(remember the famous 1kg for couriers three years back), to try and trump up business for themselves.

If they concentrated on their core business, ie postal services, they would not have to compete with CNA, or sell lotto tickets or whatever.

How difficult could it be to ensure that mail employees in the large sorting exchanges do not steal mail. Proper security alone should be sufficient. It will also help if complaints can be easily logged and by analysing these complaints, black spots in the system could be identified and rectified.

There is one other place where i believe theft is also happening, and that is at theSARS clearing depots, which have easy access to the contents and value of the parcels.

I don't know. Amazon sells CDs and DVDs from USA/or imports to the USA,
to anywhere else, however they won't sell US only games and software
or electronics. Why can't they sell a PS2 game or PC game for Windows
released for the US market to us here but they will sell CDs and DVDs
released for the US market only to us.

BTW Kalahari is even worse. They won't sell SA released CDs outside
of SA either. Like totally controlled or afraid of the big companies.

Still other retailers resell everything (eg CD Universe sells CD/DVD and games to anyone in the world.)
