Amazon to test 30-hour workweek for 75% pay

So Amazon is FINALLY running out of cash? Spin it all you like, but this is most likely a cost cutting measure and nothing else.

The teams involved in the pilot will work on tech products within the human resources division of the company
:erm: seems those teams have been earmarked for ejection in the near future ...

I'd rather do 4 days of 13 hours of work for full pay.

Lol. Amazon is definitely not running out of money

Most likely true, it's still curious that they would implement such a cost cutting measure though. Ignore the spin around "pilot group", "work life balance" etc, it's about cutting costs, pure and simple.

Might work well for some people but most passionate software engineers I know want to put in a lot hours.

Can be very difficult during normal hours to really get some cutting edge work done with all the "business as usual", meetings and context switching.

With the amount of hours the job demands just on personal R&D that you bring back into the company, I wouldn't feel motivated at 75%, at least not to share my advances. Rather keep it for my own projects or a company willing to pony up.

Full pay, 1 day work from home, that's in the right direction.

It feels like a cost cutting measure on borderline staff.

Employees = less work, less pay
Investors = less (no) work, more.....well, do the pay, earn, take?

Sounds pretty cool to allow people more flexibility. A critical point it seems to have been missed in the comments so far, sure its 75% of the pay, but with FULL BENEFITS, so if you look at the gross package its actually slightly better if they have decent benefits (anyone know what the benefits are by any chance?).

Being able to work a 4 day week getting 25% less cash, but still getting full medical, life insurance, car/travel allowance, communications allowance, etc is a good deal.

Bro & his wife in Switserland's been having it. Not Amazon, but voluntary 4 day week, 3 day weekend at 80% of salary instead of having to retrench people.

It's a productivity pilot, not a cost cutting one. They're trying to see if shorter work weeks with more employees work better than the norm.

Edit: There is a lot of research out there that this should improve productivity. This is just a practical trial.

I know what they call it, I just also know it is more often than not just sugar coating of looming retrenchments / cost cutting e.g. post #14 in this thread.

They might or might not retrench - they are a behemoth so it's natural - but ultimately it's an attempt at social engineering as they certainly have no lack of cash.

I'm very doubtful of that. Their last few quarters have been seeing huge profits. Amazon have traditionally reabsorbed their profits into future investments. Plus, if you're running out of cash, you would normally drive the workforce to do double the hours to boost productivity; not cut their hours for prorated pay.
