Johannesburg - The biggest union at the South African operations of the world’s three largest platinum producers is demanding a 3,000-rand payment for each worker to end a strike, according to two people familiar with the talks.

The Association of Mineworkers and Construction Union also wants Anglo American Platinum, Impala Platinum and Lonmin to withdraw criminal charges against members suspected of violent crimes related to the 21 week-long stoppage, the people said, asking not to be identified because the information isn’t public.

The payment is in addition to other allowances and wage increases, they said.

Workers fired during the walkout should be reinstated and the Amcu will agree not to go on another strike if the companies pledge to avoid cutting jobs, the people said.

Amcu President Joseph Mathunjwa didn’t answer calls or text messages to his mobile phone when Bloomberg News sought comment on the agreement.

The demands were first reported by Johannesburg-based the New Age newspaper. - Bloomberg News

WTH? This is bribery, just plain and simple. Lonmin should file criminal charges.

Was the exact wording in the financial times today.

I'm also labeling this extortion. Close them mines, see what happens then. I'm only wondering why they haven't already since the mines been going on about how unprofitable things have become.

Can someone explain to me how this is different from organized crime?

wait are AMCU demanding that AMCU be paid 3k per worker or that workers get 3k on top of whatever else

if AMCU is to be paid it is outright extortion and somebody should POCA their ass
if it is to the workers you have a partial initiate settlement and while violating the no work no pay principle is probably not contrary to public policy

What an awesome way to boost international confidence in South Africa. I can see why investors are falling over their feet to set up shop here.:o

I think they want 3k bread money upfront because they must have chowed those non existent savings by now.

I personally feel that SA labour laws are too rigid and strict regarding dismissal of non performing workers etc...

If I was a mine boss, I would fire the lot of them and hire people who really want to work.

Its extortion through and through, and blackmail. If the companies give in to this, then AMCU / NUM and anyone else with a stupid acronym will play the same card... Its not a battle over pay, its a battle of ideology... If companies give in, then the bar is set...

This is far more disturbing than the financial demand.

My thoughts exactly. While its strike time murder all you want, it'll be pardoned once the strike is over and we get all the monies :D

Violent crime eh? I sure the unions protest their workers don't have a single violent bone among them, and that the strikes be peaceful affairs..... Erm.
