After last week’s news that AMD would be releasing the tantalizingly-Bulldozer but strictly server-oriented Interlagos chip, we were all a little worried about the fate of its long-awaited desktop counterpart Zambezi — and the rebirth of the rig builder’s favorite “FX” moniker. Well, there’s good news and bad news: we now have a release date — fourth quarter, so any time between October and December — and we also have the pricing.

hmmm but is it worth going for it ... will the AMD 6-8 core stand up to Intels new 6 core sandy-B release?

I ready somewhere that AMD got into the G book of records for over clocking to 8.425Ghz but only on 2 core 2 thread
but intel was able to bring a 6core 12 thread to 8.305Ghz .... not sure if my numbers are correct but i'd still go with
an Intel even if it was still only a 4 core chip

Incorrect. AMD brought a single 1 module 2 core bulldozer to 8.4Ghz. Someone not affiliated with Intel managed to bring a single core P4 generation Celeron to 8.3Ghz a few months back.

Also the prices of BD have not been confirmed. Neither has the release date. All information currently available about BD is unfortunately only rumours. The only thing we know for sure from AMD is that the server chips have started shipping.

I read that the Interlagos processors are monsters at multithreading, when it comes to single core stuff, it's not that fabulous!

Which means that AMD's decision for their 'module' design is great in multicore operations, but when it comes to single core things, only the one module of the core can be used, which is a little bit of a problem...

However, if games start allowing multicore operations, then these might bring back the crown! Lets hope that AMD can show us what a lot of desperation and ingenious design can really do!

but most of the new games do provide for multicore operations ...

@Ancalagon thanx for setting me strait on that wasnt to sure just skimmed the article,

but my question still
stands ... knowing that Intel is only dropping a new 6 core SB variant as apposed
AMD 8 core BD set would you get an AMD now or wait for Intel release a new 8 core.

I've never had an AMD chip and motherboard before and I bought my first ATI card
at the beginning of this year so just wondering if it would be worth it getting into the
BD stuff now or wait for intel.

The whole 'core' concept of Bulldozer is completely different to the architecture of previous multicore chips like Core2 and AM3. An 8-core Bulldozer piece isn't the same as a 6 or 8-core Intel. It remains to be seen how it actually works in real usage.

It appears though that Ivy Bridge won't bring a huge CPU boost, since they're dedicating a significant chunk of transistors to graphics. Personally I don't see the logic of that because at the high end of the CPU consumer market dedicated graphics are just ubiquitous. I might be missing something there though. AMD is going to struggle when Intel hits full steam with 22nm though since they will have barely matured their own 32nm parts.

All depends on price vs performance. I'm brand agnostic.

I've always used AMD, my current Intel rig is also my first Intel build, purchased purely based on price vs performance.
I never buy the latest/fastest kit as it does not make financial sense, I try and find the sweet spot.

Source?

I haven't seen this new confirmed delay anywhere else. Killa must post the source.

AFAIK my friend( has high up contacts in amd etc), there is no delay, maybe delay for public getting hold of the cpus, but there should be a paper launch on schedule.

A good one. Cannot remember it now and i got no access to google, just type in amd bulldozer it will bring up some info. They are launching the server chips then the desktop.

The launch is not delayed but you guys think the launch is for the desktop cpu's and it is for the server cpu's.

As soon as i get home i will gooi some google skillz and reveal my source :D

WHY did they bench it against the previous generation i7 and not against like the i7 2600k?!
The i7 2600k is faster than the i7 980x in everything, except for the multi-threaded applications that will use all 12 threads at 100%.

Linking sources is just good manners when posting news. Remember for next time.

I never thought it would be questioned though.

I don't have some anti amd agenda, it is was rather sad news actually. I love new pc bits regardless who makes them. Will find the link for you now now since you are google shy :D

As you can see the server cpu's are released on the 26 of sept not the desktop ones. It seems nobody knows for sure when the desktop ones will land, some say october some say q4 which could mean dec.

Guru reckons mid October http://www.guru3d.com/news/amd-bulldozer-desktop-chips-delayed-to-october/

Nobody knows for sure but one thing is certain the desktop cpu's will not be launched this month only the server cpu's.

they teasing as they know everyone wants to see what it does against the 2600k, amd is sitting there looking at us with a troll face :P
