AMD compatibility

Sorry for a probably stupid post, but not very clued up on AMD...

If I buy an AMD 3500+ which is Socket 939, and a 939 mobo to go with it, will I in future be able to buy an AM2 CPU that'll work in the mobo, or an AM2 mobo that'll work wig this CPU? Or will I have to buy a new CPU and mobo?

I'm almost certain the second option is true, but would just like to confirm.

Btw, will this CPU be a very noticeable performance increase over my current Celeron? Again, pretty sure about this one, but would like to make sure...

What is your Current Celeron? If you buy a 939 motherboard and CPU, you wont be able to use AM2 processor or motherboard or the DDR RAM that you used with your 939 either.

Nope, AM2 has higher FSB speed. Don't buy socket 939, there's nowhere to go from there. If you're set on AMD, try and get a Socket F CPU with 1MB L2 cache for your AM2 mobo.
There will definitely be a performance improvement over your current setup, even with an AMD3500+ socket 939.
I would advise you to reconsider your plan completely. The 45nm Intels should push the price of a 65nm Q6600 down even further from what it cost Nov/Dec last year. Have a second look at your budget :).

dont get skt 939. its dead. Go AM2. AM2 5600+ dual core is nice. Also 939 is set on ddr400 ram so thats not good, especially with ddr2 getting to good speeds. So dont even look at it.
