I've noticed that, despite there being new AMD CPUs, that they do not appear on the price lists of Rectron and Bethesda. Does anyone know why? And is there any place that still sells AMDs?

AMD opened their own H.O in JHB in 2007, stopped using Rectron as a distributer (must have been the same with other distributers). But I see now they have shut the SA office down this year, maybe they will go back to the old arrangements.

That would explain it.

Well I did see an AMD motherboard on Rectron's site, although it's kinda pointless without the CPU. I hope things go back to normal soon.

yaa, thats a gigabyte product - one of their key products, nothing to do with AMD the Cpu producer.

This week I popped in a AMD Phenom 2 x4 940 into my machine, that I purchased from Frontosa. Brilliant cpu, eats everything i throw at it...

Maybe it's part of Intel's tactics to stop people from buying AMD... (referring to the recent case in the EU).

I always ran AMD systems, then when that stupid AMD H.O started, was same time I did my upgrade, there were no AMD 6400's anywhere. So i had to get an Intel. Got the Q6600 2.4quad. Must say loved it. Really good chip. But I miss being an AMD fanboi !! not to mention u can chuck the new chip in without upgrading your MB !

intel probably told rectum to stop selling AMD CPUs - but they did not say anything about motherboards.

Nope rectron stopped selling amd because the stock sat for a long time, core 2 destroyed amd badly and their stock did not move awfully quickly.

Now as a computer distributor you want to move stock fast and i can imagine those core 2 cpu's where flying off the rectron shelves and the amd's sat. Sahara also dropped amd when core 2 dropped for the same reasons.

Remember its only recently amd has products to rival core 2 when core 2 was released it destroyed anything amd had on the market, anyone remember amd 6000+ going for 5k then core 2 came along and it dropped under 1.5k.

Their flagship products where getting thumped by intel's entry level core 2's. Only the hardcore okes bought amd products when core 2 was released as amd really offered nothing for your money compared to intel. There was no price/performance as intel had that covered, i actually thought core 2 would see amd fold to be honest because you could see how far behind they were.

I remember my first core 2 the e6300 overclocked it to 3.2ghz and cost me 1.2k and amd's flagship was still getting thump while being more expensive.

I'm not surprised that their sales in our country have dwindled. They had about zero advertising for one. Sales distributers hated dealing with the SA AMD branch. No wonder they closed down !!!

Tell me about it. I also ran AMD until my pc was taken out by lightning. Running a Intel CPU now but would love to go back to AMD. :-)
