AMD Fanboys - The crunch time.

I am currently an AMD fanboy and have been since I started with computers. I have never personally owned an Intel machine. Every October is my upgrade time period and I have a question... Is it time to turn over to the blue team?

I recently checked out the performance of the new Core i5 CPU that I sold to a friend of mine and it's mind boggling seeing the speed of the system! And the price too!

Intel i5 system:
-4GB DDR3-1333 RAM
-ASUS P7P55D Motherboard (Socket LGA1156)
-Intel LGA1156 i5 750 - Quad core , 2.66GHz CPU , 3.2GHz
turbo boost

As opposed to:
-AMD socket AM3 Phenom2 x4 , Quad-core 945 ( 3.0Ghz )
-4GB DDR3-1333 RAM
-Asus M4A79T Delux, AMD 790FX/SB750 chipset - ATX

Which one is better? Which one is faster? Which one should I go for? Which one will give me the better future proofing?

I'm currently running:
-AMD Socket AM2+ Athlon X2 7750+ 2.7GHz
-2GB DDR2-800
-ASUS M3A-H/HMDi
-ASUS EAH4670 512MB
 
Nah. Take the AM3 system. Why not a 955 though?
 
I think Intel this round. Unless you're waiting for an AMD price drop.
 
In tests I've seen the i5 takes it over the AMD, even the 965. However, some here have said there's something about the on-die PCIe ports and dual card comms.

I'm in upgrade phase as well and the Intel is tempting, but I'll still be going phenomII.

And yes it is always nice to note the speediness of a new system, but difficult to compare it to something you have not tried. So only way to really compare it is to see the AMD solution firsthand.

I think both are future proof as both of the indicated sockets are quite new and they're DDR3 (although I hope DDR2 doesn't just vanish). There is talk of the 6-core desktop CPUs from both AMD and Inte arriving in the near future (ie. within the next year). AMD 6-core will be AM3 compatible. Same on the Intel front with 6-core being available for LGA1156, unless Intel pull another one and come up with some other socket again.
 
Dude take advice from people who are not biased, we all know who the amd lovers are so ignore what they say, get the intel because it is the better product.

buying computers should never be based on what company you like but rather what company offers the best price and that is intel at the moment, those i5 cpu's look incredible.

Rift is an amd fan but he has sense at least :D, anyways if you really love amd than buy it man but intel is the best and the best in performance and price at the moment. If you really want to support amd by all means it is not like the amd's are miles behind intel.

Wahahah! :D Yes, I probably am an AMD fanboy when I'm at home, but the better product does currently lie with Intel.

I'll support AMD though. If everyone quit AMD imagine what would happen if Intel won the entire market. When you hog a market where the buyer has no choice then there's no need to make a new better product. :D "Competition" FTW provided all players pull their socks up. :D

Your MB should easily take the Phenom II 955 add the 4890 and 2*2Gig Cosair modules, and you are set without a whole new setup.

What is your budget?
What Graphics Card is your friend running?
Are you a gamer or graphics designer?

IMO you are currently future proofed unless you are talking about 2015

Some of you may notice the time of this post, others may not. I've put a lot of thought into it and looked at my options and restrictions. I am on a budget (5k or so) but can go up or down easily. The way i see it is that the i5 is popular but there is really only one choice at the moment, being the processor i mentioned. Should i wait for price drops to come early next year? I remember buying an AMD Athlon X2 4200+ four years ago at R2k, only to see the price drop dramatically after 3 months.

My options:
Buy an i5, lose the AMD fanboy status.
Buy a Phenom, keep fanboy status.

The only reason i'm not buying a Phenom chip right now and throwing it into my current board is because the i5 system has so much to offer at such a great price whereas i actually need to spend more money on an AMD system to get the same features. I shall edit this post later today when i'm near a computer and more awake :D

Waha! :D

Buy the i5. I don't suspect AMD will bring down the price of the phenomII very soon. If that were the case we'd already have seen a drop when the i5 was released.

Or if you are going to wait, then wait for the i5 price to drop a bit.

Why are people worried about keeping their AMD or Intel fanboy status? It's like admitting defeat. :D If you like the Intel and want the Intel then take the Intel. If you like the AMD and want the AMD then take the AMD.
