AMD launches Phenom II

Could be very good... and a reason for me to do an upgrade sooner rather than later...

The R10k + it would cost to do an i7 upgrade was not attractive to me.
 
Will this work on an AM2 not + mobo, if yes then I want one :P. I can upgrade the mobo later...

Nope, unfortunately AM3 is only backwards compatible with AM2 +

If AMD can do for CPU's what they did for Graphics cards in 2008 with the HD4800 series, then Intel is in for a tough time...
 
How about pricing on all the cpus that will be released?
 
The Loser? Phenom II

Here's [H]'s bottom line:

The Phenom II performance speaks for itself. It loses to its old nemesis, the Core 2, which I think some folks will be surprised by. The Phenom II loses to the Core i7, which I think was to be expected. The Phenom II is a loser.

There are only 2 at the moment and AMD could only comment on pricing for the Black Edition.

The Black edition is $275 in the USA and should be about R3500 here.
The alternative to the Black Edition, the 920, is $235 in the US, so it stands to reason that it will come in at around R3000, or a bit less....

Its cheaper than i7 and beats it narrowly in some games, and loses narrowly in others... which surely makes it better value than the i7 for gaming? Kinda like how the HD4800 series offers better value than the GTX200 series?

It doesnt have to be faster than i7, and it really shouldnt considering it is far cheaper...
 
This is good news indeed, but I'll stick with my AM2 Athlon 6000 for now. Paying premium on new technology is a bit daft although these prices do look very nice.

Still, when buying a CPU I do not consider price or performance a factor, corporate ethics and a track record of innovations is what draws me.

I'm not talking about the i7, Im talking about the c2q9550 and that's why i specifically have used the c2q9550 in my comparison and not the i7. Try to read my whole post up to end please .
