Did you happen to read this particular part of that review:

As always, these benchmarks in no way represent real-world gameplay. They are all run at very low resolutions to try our best to remove the video card as a bottleneck. I will not hesitate to say that anyone spouting these types of framerate measurements as a true measuring tool in today’s climate is not servicing your needs or telling you the real truth.

I'm not saying the phenomII is better, in fact the exact opposite, but realistically those are not comparable systems...DDR3 1600 vs DDR2 800.

EDIT: I would be really interested in seeing benchmarks for the entire packages compared, ati graphics vs nvidia, all running DDR3 etc.

So the Q9550 is R4200.... R700 more than the recommended retail price of the Phenom II Black edition (with an unlocked multiplier) and it loses narrowly at stock speeds?

So the Phenom Black Edition is surely a far superior buy then?

Oh, and
A local AMD representative said that the 940 Black Edition is expected to retail locally at around R3500, undercutting Intel’s entry level i7 920.

Currently the Phenom II Black Edition is priced at $275 in the US while Newegg sells the Q9550 for $315.

Its slightly faster, a a fair bit cheaper...

That is a blind ripp off and I sincerely hope that the price comes down. As stated, the same CPU retails for $275 in the states, and AMD's official recommended retail price (directly from them in an email) states that it should retail for R3500 locally.

At that price I agree with you, there is not much difference. The Phenom II Black Edition is $30 cheaper in the US than the Q9550 I would wait for other dealers to make the CPU available for less before buying..

In the meantime i defer the remainder of this arguments to Tomshardware

probably got the europe tax slapped as it crossed the US border.

275 U.S. dollars = 2 639.02884 South African rands

then applying the europe factor (roughly 41%) with sa tax (could also maybe be markup)

2 639.02884 * 1.41 * 1.14 = 4 241.97496

which is R4 241.97 brings it strangely close to what DSO asks.... ;)

Damnit! I just bought my Phenom 9950 about a month ago! I would've waited for these babies! crap :(

I have contacted AMD for comment. There is no reason the Phenom II should be the same price as a Q9550, the import taxes should apply to both, no?

It will be a pity if Phenom II ends up being overpriced locally...

When there is more availability I predict the price will come down, right now DSO are the only retailer stocking the CPU...

Surely what is important here is the price of the entire system, not just the CPU. When you factor in the cost of an AMD-type motherboard vs. and Intel-type board and ATI vs Nvidia the AMD system starts to look quite a bit cheaper.

From the benches ive read its looks like the higher the rez on the game, the better the cpu get. Still not i7 but its a step in the right direction. Now i can make the rest of my system match my AMD GPU card.:D

the Phenom II X4 processors still make use of the AM2+ socket, the very same socket used by existing Phenom X4 and X3 processors.
